Kitchen Concept! Help!

10 years ago
Hello, we are building a new kitchen and have two final designs that are quite similar but provide different benefits. The island will be unchanged at 72 inches.

The decision I am having difficulties is between;

1. if we should have two 36" inch drawers cabinets with two wall cabinets above corresponding. The benefit is obviously large drawers for pots and plates and utensils. This would split the counter top to have the exact same surface area on either side of the stove. The Con is the stove is kinda sneaking into the sink area so it might be for two people.

2. To have three 24" cabinets with three wall cabinets corresponding. I would place two cabinets together to get counter space between stove and fridge to be 48 inches instead of 36. The left side of the stove would only have 24 inch of space which could hold some of our other small appliances or knives/bread. Another plus is that the work triangle is almost perfect. The Con is that it would cost a little more and not sure if all the pots would fit as smoothly as they would in a large 36 inch drawer.

    24" cabinets are pretty tight for large pots/pans. Your concern about option 1, sneaking into the sink area is only a concern if there is not enough space between the island and the perimeter cabinets. If it is 48" or wider, it shouldn't be a problem (42" is the minimum recommendation). If it is less than that, it could feel tight, and be difficult with more than one person in there at the same time.

    I am leaning more towards the 36 inch cabinets due to the storage capacity. This option is also less expensive. The main thing that the other option has is a 48 inch countertop between stove and fridge which would be a great prep area.

    The space between the island and the cabinets will be 36-42''. It will be a little more snug. I would definitely prefer 48'' but then the rest of the layout would be quite cramped.

    Have you thought of doing a 48" wide base cabinet between the range & fridge? You could do a split top drawer (two 24" wide shallow drawers), with two large 48" wide drawers below. Keep the upper cabinets both 24". Just another idea. Good Luck!

    Someone recommended even more counter space by doing this. However not a single cabinet is the sameness then. Not symmetrical but has 30" inch cabinet, 24" and 18". What do you guys think?

    Functionality trumps symmetry. The bigger prep space wins. Especially in a small kitchen. Unless you don't cook?

    Sophie would you prefer option with 24" cabinets or the one in comment section with 30,24,18". The second option provides a counter with 54 inches but then the cabinets on the left side of the stove are smaller.
