Need help selecting very good direct vent gas (propane) fireplace.

We have a small home and want the fireplace (not an insert) for our family room (step down converted garage) which is semi-open to the living room and kitchen - 9 ft. ceilings. Do not need it to heat the entire home, however, space is small (1,200 sq. foot - includes family room, living room and kitchen); I am looking for realistic flames, remote, burning embers and importantly ceramic glass. I prefer direct vent because from what I read this is the most efficient and safest way to go (fumes, etc.). Only one set of windows in the family room - bay window seat. I can't find any solid reviews on these fireplaces and would welcome any help I can get.

We use Heat & Glo products. Have not used them, but also understand Mendota makes a nice unit.

Thank you Deborah, I have also found (on line - not sure of the reviews) the following model

Empire Tahoe Luxury Direct Vent Propane RF Fireplace with Remote Control - 36" - DVX36FP91LP - sounded nice - but who knows.... I will check out the Mendota and I have heard good things about Heat & Glo products.

I'm deciding on a direct vent fireplace for a corner in our living room and the Tahoe from White Mountain Hearth (Empire Comfort) is in the running. I like the premium model the most. I saw it in person on Saturday and it has a realistic flame and embers. The logs inside fill the space perfectly.

Have you looked at the Avalon fireplaces? They're the most realistic I've seen (ember fyre), and comes standard with a ton of features, 70% turn down, and you can turn off the back burner for a smaller flame. They're higher in price than the Empire, part of the reason I haven't made a decision yet, and the log sets don't seem to fill the box as nicely as the Empire.

Have you checked out the company called Fireplace Xtrodinaire. I have three of them in my home can't say enough nice things about them.
