Use tiles, not hardwood floor. We have hardwood in our new kitchen, and it's a pain. We always had large porcelain tiles before in previous houses, and tiles are much easier to clean and maintain (as long as you don't get white grout).

Get new lighting too. I recommend under-cabinet lights also that are wired to a switch before you get new back splash.

Hi!

1. The Cloud White by BM paint would
be great for this kitchen, and if you don't like the arches, you can
always put adhesive coatings on them. But for sure it will be better
in white anyway.

2. I could see a dark hardwood floor,
the contrast would be great with the white cabinets.

3. For backsplash, I recommend thin
tiles, in white and grey shades.

4. Don't worry about having a dull
kitchen. If you choose a light, warm grey, the result will be great
against the white cabinets.

5. I would recommend a round table,
it will be warmer looking. Why not in white wood? Instead of
curtains, try roman blinds, it's a great option for a kitchen.

Also, you can change the cabinets
handles, it makes all the difference. And more lights can be added,
so cooking and meals will be more enjoyable.

@acm - Thanks for the advice on paint colors. We have been spending a lot of time on paint colors and should be focusing on the backsplash and floor! I love the idea on the Roman blinds. @Beeg R We were looking at putting in hardwood on the whole level, but we are worried about the upkeep vs tile with 2 young kids running around, spilling things and then walking away. We are looking perhaps getting hardwood looking tile. Also, we are going to get a quote for the under cabinet lighting before we put in a backsplash.

You've gotten good advice, and are on the right track. Don't forget about updating your lighting, which will make a huge difference in function and style.

You say that you can't afford to change the cabinets "at this time". But if you put stone on top of them, you are forever locking them into place. As is. No changing them out and improving that layout at a later date. I would strongly suggest that you put the brakes on and develop a master plan for your home before going about the project in a way that may waste money and effort that could be spent on achieving better long term results. There is a better more functional kitchen to be had out of that space!

Painting the cabinets a lighter color would definitely help brighten up the space to some extent. Also if you are looking for other novel redecorating ideas, I'd suggest a glass or marble mosaic backsplash if I may. They look great and brighten the place up while being practical and durable. I hate being the cast out but I don't think the cabinets need painting. In fact, they might mix well with your new counter. At least wait until after the countertops are in. Your lighting seems adequate. I can't see the light over the table.

I don't like your vinyl either. While looking for flooring look at linoleum. It can stand up to a lot of wear. I don't see a need for a backsplash. If you get one make it as plain as possible. I hope you will post again once the counter is installed.
