Thanks for the suggestion. the counters i keep clean, maybe some fruite basket but pretty simple.

Under cabinet puck lights and I agree with above. Light rugs under sink.

My kitchen is just like this and we put in 9 pot lights above the cabinets and island. It makes a big different.

Skylight could help too.

Consider LED strip lights under the cabinets. They really brighten up the counter. Consider adding a colorful area rug by the sink. If it's in your budget get some colorful leather stools rather than the black ones. If budget is an issue, consider having these recovered with an accent color leather. You might add a few pendant lights above the island to give you more mood lighting and something that will break up the view of all brown cabinets. They are lovely, but are also concentrated in that area.

I know it's new, but I would remove the valance over the sink.

Is this new construction, or your recently purchase older house? Do I see a drop down on the ceiling near the fridge? What lighting do you have? Ceiling and under counter? Any light behind the wood valance? Agree that the dark modern style stools aren't helping.

I agree with more pot lights but I would also bump it up with a nice crystal chandelier over the island. It would catch any natural light from that window even when it's off. I also like the idea of painting the island a lighter colour. Some white leather island stools would also help.

Consult with a lighting designer. It will be well worth the money. The cabinets are a traditional style so I recommend less modern bar stools. They still can have clean lines but not so industrial. You could paint the island in one of the gray tones you find in the backsplash stone tiles and counter tops. I agree that a handsome chandler or lantern over the island would be a bright focal point.

I echo other posts about undercounter lighting. I like Tres' s idea about painting the island. Not all roof lines can accommodate a sky light as suggested. I would suggest you check into a sun tunnel which will bring in the natural light needed in your kitchen.
