Your walls are gold and your sofa is too. I think the white would stand out too much, not in a good way. I don't have any alternate suggestions, I am not very knowledgeable about specific decor styles.

Any change you might paint the room? I ask bc everything blends together.... lots of tan.

I'm not sure if it's because it's juxtaposed with your gorgeous windows or not, but when I saw the table before reading your post, I thought it was going to be a question about a sunroom or outdoor space. I think the table looks a bit like patio or sunroom furniture (I think because of the slatted bottom). I think aktillery's suggestion would look great.

Thanks for the suggestions, thus far. I probably will be painting. I haven't figured out a color yet. Im not much into grays. The fireplace wall is also a common wall with my diningarea/kitchen on the next level up. UGH, I love that table! LOL Keep em coming please!

First of all- what a gorgeous window and plants!

Now, your sofa looks antique-ish , delicate and dainty. The coffee table looks rough and too "beach house", and the stain color's too stark in the relationship to the sofa. Sometimes you can successfully mix styles and periods and textures, but in my opinion it won't fly with this particular pair of furnishings. If you want contrast, something younger-looking, more relaxed so to say that still will work together -maybe go for simpler shape of legs, or less-important feeling texture-like maybe something like a sea grass chest/coffee table/ottoman, you know? It will give a country feel, and won't fight that much with a shape and stain of the sofa. You can also find an ottoman, like in one of your pictures, or a skirted one, and top it with a tray. The sofa is very shapely-the less assuming the coffee table/ottoman will be, the better, unless you decide to just go for the match, because you love the look.

I'd definitely work with colors a bit-maybe a new rug? Although truth must be told-it's pretty hard to see the color of the one you've got on the pictures..it looks gray on my screen, so I might be all off.

And -new color for the walls, maybe something darker, or let's say more pigmented, can do wonders for vintage furnishings/antiques. Of course the paint color should correlate with your new stone too. Meaning-shouldn't be too stark or fresh.

I like your chair color..the dark berry one? Maybe you can find a throw or a pillow that has a dark berry in it, and add it to your sofa...it will tie things together, and I find pillows and throws cozy and relaxed-looking.

So, my plan would be:

-wait until the stone goes up

-decide on a wall color-change, not change, change to what color? Paint if decided so. Take into account the stone color, the big pieces that you love and that will stay for sure-like the sofa.

-take out all the accent/small pieces to see the room with a fresh eye. Add one by one whatever still makes you happy. Simultaneously look for the coffee table/new soft accents/ new art if you'd like that?

Thanks April, i actually do have cranberry colored pillows on the love seat part of that sofa and the area rug in there is a sage green (picks up the greens in the sofa). I planned on getting rid of that chair. Are the majority of people thinking i should just go with a dark brown wood coffee table?

Agree that it's all the tan causing the problems for the table you want. Anything in the budget for reupholstering the sofa?

The stone FP is going to be the star of the room. What if you painted the walls a soft, warm white, like BM Muslin? Another really beautiful, creamy warm white is BM Capitol White (which I'm using for my kitchen).

The sofa isnt an antique or anything real expensive. (Clayton Marcus). Im posting a picture of the entire wall so you guys that are trying to help can see the dilemma of paint. It carries into another room. I think anything in the white family would be too stark and sterile. If I remove the marble tables, the cranberry chair and just buy a round dark wood coffee table, do you think that would "un formalize" the room a bit?

Well, technically-to some point, yes. What's considered, or rather impresses us, as "formal"? Usually:- More elaborate woodwork=more formal. More expensive,shiny surfaces (marble, polished wood, silk, crystal, gold, traditional rugs, curtains with valances or tassels)=more formal. More shapely/embellished upholstery =more formal. Whatever, at least seemingly, required good material and longer work. It's not something cut in stone, yes? You can have a nice mix of this and that and play with it too. And simple pieces can be works of art as well)) But let's say that for the sake of this particular case-yes, removing the "fussier" pieces will un-formalize the room to an extent.

Can you try to take them out, one by one, to see how it feels?

I'd hold a bit until actually buying a table..give yourself some time. Better to be without a coffee table for a week or two or three, than to buy something that "maybe works" You'll see what kind of table your room will want, when the stone will go up, and some pieces temporarily will be out.

As for the paint-I'm with you..I think will be too hard to pick white that won't look strange next to the stone..I can see how it may work in some geographic locations maybe, where the stone itself is different, but not in this context. If anything-I'd pick richer color, would look great with your wood..but it's trial and error. Ordering ten samples, running with them around, looking at them in the morning, day, and night..Not a small undertaking)). But might turn out beautiful.

I like your house..I like the levels, and the flow..it's pretty.

One question. Why do you prefer a round table? Just a preference, or because you feel a room need a round/oval element, or the walking path makes more sense this way?..

I think it's the wall color more than anything that is throwing the room off. If you were to paint it a soft cream or a very light sage it will brighten it up and give you a good canvas for the other elements in the room. On my screen, the color you have now comes off as very drab, almost depressing.

I think there are some easy changes that could be made to update your room. I just did some of these because I felt my similar room looked dated.

Are all of the plants sitting around on tables and the fireplace real or silk, if silk get rid of them. If real consolidate them. Pare down the pictures on the tables and other accent items. Go with a few "statement" pieces. You have the two lanterns, group them to make a larger arrangement with a third item.

Perhaps softer colored pillows won't jump out so much, especially if the maroon chair is leaving. Do you have two matching couches or is one a chair? I would probably go for some kind of rectangular wood toned table. It's difficult to tell what is on the left side of the room. Perhaps a round would work if their is enough room. Is the table a space holder or is it actually used for drink or feet? That may help make the decision on shape.

Can you simplify or remove the curtains? While lovely and I am sure pricey, they do date and "formalize" the room. Perhaps remove the upper swag and keep the lower ones? I would probably go for some kind of wood toned table.

It's a pretty room, but I 'get' you wanting a change. While I like the round white table, I think it's more cottage style and would clash with the stone fireplace.

I would keep the wingback chair(is their another one?)and consider having it reupholstered in a black/ivory Buffalo check or gold/ivory.

Change out lampshades to black~everyone seems 'stuck' on white.

Change out picture matting to black.

Consider buying a pattern area rug w/black background.

Remove the swags. If you want draperies consider simple panels, possibly a Buffalo check, same as the chair~if you want lighter, gold/ivory would be good.

Remove the end table next to the fireplace or place it between the sofa/chair.

Remove the long coffee table style table on the *other* side of the chair completely, or to the other side of the sofa.

I would remove the small accessories.

If you re-do the fireplace, consider two large pieces for each end of the mantle.

When I look at your room nothing stands out, yet it is pleasing to the eye. IMHO, bringing in some black will add drama and excitement to an otherwise 'quiet' room. Have fun, and don't overthink it! ;)

Have you committed to the changes to the fireplace? I think you could get some of the updated look you want much less expensively by paint washing or painting the brick and changing the mantel. I think you could get the shelves knocked down and cover any remnants with the paint.

I love the coffee table you picked out and think it would look good with your windows and plants as a backdrop but.... I think your couch is such a different style and the beige just is so close to the couch color so it is hard to see that table with those two items. Maybe do some inspiration image hunting and post what you really like to get some better ideas on what to change.

Ditto to olychic re:painting the fireplace.

The coffee table you showed looks just "country" to me with no hint of French. The lines of the one Aktillery posted are much more "French" in style, not that you necessarily need to go that route, but you said that was what you were looking to create. I think sometimes Americans don't realize that even country French can be fairly formal.

I had a very similar colored stone as the one you are adding, in my family room. Our designer picked SW Sand Dollar as the paint color and it looked wonderful. It might look nice with your sofa too.

I'm seeing many different wood tones already. The sofa arms, accent table by the fireplace, railing, larger table under the railing..all are different. No two the same. Maybe it is just the photos. I too live with a multitude of wood tones..seeing your pictures makes me wonder if I have a problem going on.

LOL Arcy, im sure you dont have a problem going on. I am constantly watching this on hgtv, in magazines and on line. The days of all the wood matching are gone. I may have too many different ones because I renovate and buy furniture at all different stages of my life. My styles change and sometimes a piece I like doesnt come in a wood tone to match. We are moving in about 2.5 years and I plan on keeping very little of my furniture. Im trying to buy pieces that I love now (if I have to buy anything) to bring with me, but of course, none of that matches what I currently have. After moving, it will probably be the first time in my life, that my furniture style flows from room to room because it will all be purchased at the same time. I will post pictures when its all done. Im sure in the end, it will all come together.
