I don't think you have enough room for an island if you have cabinets on both sides. You might have enough room for a sideways island, but it would make the kitchen very small.

Our home has a similar layout to yours. Our kitchen is at the back of the house and it flows directly from the kitchen to our dining than our living room. Its one long narrow space. My husband and I completely gutted our kitchen and took out a wall. We went to a designer and spent $$. Than we spent 20+ hours at Lowes designing our kitchen and that was free! We came up with a peninsula that comes out 12'' into the dining room. We also made the kitchen larger by expanding into the dining room.

I am attaching a photo of what we did.

BTW...we are not finished. We are changing out the window for one that is a casement style. I still need to choose my backsplash and paint one of the walls and paint and stain all of the trim. :)

Also a small wall was built to house the electric Kitchen Aid oven/microwave built-in combo unit.

what got displaced when the wall came down? upper cabinets? lower cabinets? fridge? dinette table?

are you hoping for storage or seating?
