Your couch's front feet would look better resting on the rug and if you move back the single chair..maybe that will help with a decision. Just wondering if another foot on both sides will bring it too close to your dining chairs.

We always recommend placing at least the front feet of your furniture on the rug, I suggest laying out tape on your floor to get the scale of what the 8x10 rug would feel like in your space. Also you could possibly turn it the other direction if you go with the larger size, I normally would so go bigger, but in your case you may be good with the size you have, Do you often have all the chairs in use, or do is it mostly like 2 of you?

Will try placing the couch's feet on the rug and the 8x10 tape idea. We may be able to move our couch a bit closer to the window. That may increase the width between the living and dining spaces.

Since the size of the rug needs to be enlarged a bit, maybe you'll consider a rug with a bit more impact for your room. See images below. Both from Overstock.

BTW that Chesterfield sofa is quite nice. Would you mind sharing the name of the manufacturer or retailer?

@granom, what colors do you suggest? I felt the sofa color was already a bit bold so we decided to go with a lighter rug. Dark blue was my initial pick but with our dark wood floors and lack of ample sunlight, we decided on something a bit neutral, yet contrasting.

@BeverlyFLADeziner, the couch is from Macy's. It it the Martha Stewart Saybridge one.

Can you move it so it's just a bit under the couch and take some more pictures? It looks like it should work as is.

The rug appears too small. Larger would be better. You can position it closer to the window and move your sofa over a bit to center it. Have your sofa legs and about a foot or two on the rug. Have you considered a more neutral color? Maybe jute or sisal? Very pretty sofa.

Your sofa appears to be an orange/rust color, but Macy's only offers it in Berry.......is that the real color of the sofa, Berry?

@BeverlyFLADeziner yes the color I chose isn't available to select online. If you go to the store to browse, the sales folks can offer different fabric options from the same manufacturer. I think the fabric is called Clay and I see it listed under the Elliot Fabric microfiber sectional online. Check it out.

For those who asked me to place the rug under the couch's front feet, here are some pics. Does this size work or should I still go a size bigger?

Yes, definitely a larger size, but do get the same rug as I think it is very pretty and works so well with the rest of the room! I love the pieces you picked for your room.

Your rug is beautiful and, yes, go with the larger size. Tie the sofa to the rug with pillow and accessories in the gray/blue of the rug and the coral of the sofa.

It does look a bit small. I don't think you need another type rug though, this goes very nicely with your decor.

It does look better but a tad small. I think 8x10 may be too large. Definitely do the painters tape before making a decision. There are many in between sizes such as 6x9. Too big can look just as bad as too small.

A much larger size will fill the space better, you can always place the entire sofa and chair on the rug, so go larger.

I'm going to be the odd man out and say that I love both the color choice and size of your rug. Since your room is not very large and you don't have a lot of furniture, the 8 X10 could over-power it and get in the way of your dining chairs. I think the size is perfect.

If you do have doubts, though, I would order the next size and try it. If I'm not mistaken, the rug you got came from Pottery Barn, and they are great about returns.

Going to try the 8x10 tape measure and move the setup towards the window. Unfortunately this rug doesn't come in the 6x9.

Maybe you could try rotating the rug and the sofa so that it faces the dining area set up? That way, it would be under the sofa but not encroach on the dining area?
Or a bigger rug, but place it so that it is under your bench at the window and more under your sofa, still leaving space at the dining side. I like the rug you have.

Do us a favor and tape off 8 x10 for size. I don't think it will be too large, the one you have now is a tad small, kind of floating in the room, with lots of floor around. It can be pulled way over towards the window with bench placed on it. It will define your living room.

I think the size is OK, but the rug itself is meh. Yes, it's a bold sofa choice, but this meh rug doesn't do anything for the space. In fact, I love everything about the room except the rug.

I agree, something more light and earthy, something that can stand up to the boldness of the couch. Not necessarily a pattern, but something with more texture one oomph.

Such a great sofa choice and you wimped out on the rug. ;-(

BTW, lower your art in the corner 8 - 12".

I still like the original rug best - it gives the room a serene and peaceful feeling. And it provides a nice counterbalance to the sofa.

Love your sense of style, but if you want the room to appear spacious, a larger rug will help with that. Also a rug that includes some of the clay color would add so much to the room overall.

TY all. I did like Mike's rug among all the suggestions but I don't plan to change the rug I have. Just debating on the size. I had a beautiful patterned rug in our family room but I got tired of seeing it after a few months. Also our living room isn't very big so a patterned rug in a big size might look too much IMO. Will definitely be looking for artwork to hang above the couch after this.

Finding the right rug was important for me too plus challenging to find (and that's an understatement) .... So if you feel like you've found it (it's beautiful btw), then yes, definitely just consider getting it in a bigger size and orientating it like Beverly suggested above.

Searching for the right art piece can be a really fun process, too. Really like some of the pieces suggested above by Groveraxle and Beverly. Perhaps consider looking for an original art piece too.....at local galleries, art shows (with emerging artists), etc.? There are several sources online too that sell only original art, like saatchi (one of my faves), etsy and U gallery. You can also check out chairish.com for some really cool art (original pieces, prints and reproductions). Minted.com offers some great prints too.

I think you can definitely work with the rug you have. It does impact design and decorating choices you'll need to make in order to have the rug work. I agree with BeverlyFLADeziner. A larger rug will make a small space look and feel more spacious. In a smaller space such as yours, the 5'x8' rug adds a type of visual clutter since there are so many "lines" or breaks on the floor which prevent the space from feeling cohesive. A larger rug helps the eye see the space as a whole, as well as delineating it from the dining area.

I'm wondering what's going on along the wall directly across from the sofa? I see there's an entry door in the corner, but what's to the side of that? Is there a window or is it a wall? It appears you have an additional 3'-4' of unused space. I imagine you may be using it as a traffic area if the door is your main entrance. Is this correct? Even if it is the main traffic area into the house, it seems it could be better incorporated in your design, but a floor plan would really help. I'm also not crazy about the furniture placement, specifically the bench under the window for two reasons. It adds to the visual weight on that side of your room; all the furniture, except for a small end table, is on or ends (the sofa) at that far side of the rug. The corner closest to the viewer in the photos is empty and leaves a sense of just falling away. Does that make sense? The bench is also a different style from the rest of your furniture in that area. I don't think that's a problem since having all the style/type of furniture is kind of boring (in my opinion). It can easily be blended into the whole with a different placement. As it is, it feels out of place like it was just stuck there. I know you're concerned about encroaching on the dining area, but I might consider moving the chair to the other side, away from the far wall and either a larger bench that better fits under the window or centering it under the window and adding something on either side of it (drapes as BevFlaDeziner shows could work wonders). It might even work as a "side table" in place of the small one closest to the dining area. If you want to keep the chair where it is, I'd still consider moving the bench or replacing it with something lighter (in weight and color).

Finally, a resounding yes to adding art! The ideas shown by others are great. I would also remove the orange pillow and the two plain gray(?) pillows for ones that pick up on the colors of your beautiful blue patterned pillow. You can bring in additional patterned ones picking up one or two of the colors in the blue one, but in a smaller or more graphic print (I'd avoid a print that's too busy, though). For a solid, again play off your blue one, but don't use the orange that match the sofa. I would also consider changing the color of the shade on the floor lamp, again picking up a surrounding color, perhaps from the rug, a pillow or from the art we all know you'll add :-) .

I know this is long, but I see so much potential here. There are a lot of great ideas already posted which I would definitely take advantage of. The thoughts I posted are mainly compositional ones where I'm using visceral responses to visual weight and negative space (hey, I'm a visual artist and that's how my mind works ;-D ). Use what you can, leave the rest. Best of luck on your journey that began with a simple question about a rug size.
