I would work with what you have and embrace it. Use it as a design element by hiliting it with a dramatic color choice. With the brick walls and contemporary loft space vibe I would be tempted to go with a Matt black or similarly strong color. Don't paint out just the stairwell but the adjoining cement wall next to it also. I don't know what the view is out the large opening/window/door (???) but whatever is beyond that could become the focal point of the room then. Are you re-pointing the brickwork? (It looks pretty rough). The floors could be covered with a similar color so that the walls and floors become seamless. By doing that the brick wall and the window become the focal point. It could be a very powerful space done right! Thoughts? How would you describe your design going forward with this? Industrial, airy gallery loft, minimalist...?
