White paint would give the space a more cohesive look, and hiring a professional to paint the oak would give you the best result. Examples are shown below.

Just realized your mantle is attached to your built ins....so it would have to be painted the same color as built ins worldly gray...no stain.

On the opposite side of the spectrum you could paint them a rich black color. You could paint that focal wall the same color as the rest of the walls and paint the back of the shelves that same color too.

Mark, I really like the visual for this photo, which program did you use to change the colors? I think this is a little too dark for me. I would love to see it in a light gray or greige color.

I agree with the other commenters, white or gray. White if you plan to add crown moulding.

Notice most photos with white cabinetry have natural brick fireplaces..also keeps in mind the look of the whitewash puts you in a little of a style bind...sort of country?rustic?..I would suggest a solid paint color would be more modern and go better with any color you choose

There are plenty of built ins with painted brick fireplaces. You can go from traditional to contemporary. No limitations.

My paint reference may have been unclear...I was suggesting the bricks could be more versatile if painted with a solid cover paint..and my reference to white cabinets was from this post which shows almost exclusively natural brick with white cabinets..but I admit my personal preference is not white cabinets ...anywhere in the home..I always prefer more interesting colors to the sort of overdone white cabs seen everywhere..but my goal is not really to insist on my likes being embraced but to point out options and ideas that people can use in making their own choices

Are you sure you want to keep the honey colored wall? I think that might be what is holding you back and making it difficult to select the proper color for the built-ins. If you'll notice, almost every commenter is suggesting gray or white, but in their example photos the rooms don't have honey anywhere in them. Do you have an inspiration images that show your style to give us a better visual?

Some inspiration, you could paint them white, but add colour to back of shelves, even a wallpaper to suit the gold remaining walls, grass cloth would look effective

Given that the Honey Bunny color will be staying, I'd opt for a warm white over gray. Paint the built-ins and mantel the same color to unify the entire unit with the fireplace. Consider a darker gold like Pittsburgh Paints Good Life as your "accent" color rather than a contrasting color like the red. Hope your project turns out beautifully!
