We went for a mix with more doors than drawers. We have one 30" cabinet that has three drawers, with two of them being deeper. We keep the Tupperware in one and the Corning Ware in another. The top drawer holds whisks, lades, can openers, etc. This works well for us. Step back and take a look at what you have to store, where you want to store it and how you want to get to it and that will give you an idea of how many drawers vs. doors to have.

i did a mix but the doors actually have rollout trays behind them. i find it easier to get small appliances off of a pull out tray (with 2" sides) than out of a deeper drawer, where loose items tend to collect around them.

Drawers are becoming more popular -- they mean less leaning over in order to find your pots and pans. Pull-outs inside doors are also popular, but of course you have to open both. Think about the actual things you want to store -- for example, a food processor might not fit in a drawer, but could fit easily in a cupboard with a partial-depth shelf (the standard). So you tailor your mix to the things you have.

Basically, you need to answer a couple of questions; 1) do you struggle with finding things in the usual base cabinets with drawer above and shelf behind two doors below? If so, would it be more convenient to have the things stored on that shelf, slide out to you, to make things more accessible?? (this is called a 'slide out shelf, or SOS unit) If yes again, then one more question; Do you want to open two doors in order to slide out the shelves?, because, you can have the same convenience without the door hassle by having full width drawers. For example, I often build a Cook top base cabinet with two deep drawers underneath, the perfect place for all of your pots and pans, skillets, lids and even griddles. To one side or the other (or both!) is a perfect place for slide out spice drawers or mini pantry's. Near the oven is a great place to have a large roll out drawer, that is divided to store baking sheets, pizza pans, cutting boards, heavy griddles, etc., and don't forget the trash can.... trash roll outs are very functional, easy to clean, and can be built to hold extra trash bags, or even multiple containers for recycling!

I understand that the "look" can be everything, and some folks just don't like the look of a bunch of drawers, but just as important, as a designer, is the symmetry or balance of things. A dishwasher on one side of the sink cabinet lends to placing a utility door, or door and drawer cabinet of similar size on the other side. This cabinet can be for trash cans, for baking pan organization, or a SOS cabinet.

I'd sure suggest that you work with a cabinet design place, and try to get a feel for the 'look' of what your kitchen space can be. Be sure to prioritize your wants and needs, so functional design can be incorporated. (if you bake a lot, a double oven and an appliance lift for your kitchen aide mixer might be very important to you!)

A lot of the Kitchens I have been doing lately are all drawers for the bases,customers seem to really like them.I would even look at the corner drawers,I think they are much better than a Lazy Suzan.
