Problems with Door

just moved into this house and guest bedroom door is off but not sure where. I tried adding cardboard behind bottom hinge, tried taking out wood behind top hinge, but the door still shuts like this ( see pictures) . The door also hits the carpet on thw bottom. Any other suggestions to help it close properly?

Thanks Dan. lowes and home depot have gotten enough of my money already, trying not to buy any new tools at this moment. Can you clarify what you mean by push in the bottom left corner? I was thinking of actually moving the top hinge closer to the middle of the door. I've attached pics of where the hinges sit on the frame and the door.

thank you for your help! :o)

So, I was talking about pushing the jamb on the bottom left of the door (the hinge side) further into the bedroom. If you move the bottom left corner in it will push the top right corner out. Does that make sense? The frame isn't aligned properly in the wall. It seems like the way to correct this based on the picture, but then again I am not there to see it in person.

If you don't have the tools to reinstall the door properly. Then I suppose you could take a block of wood and hammer that against the bottom left casing. It may or may not move depending on how well the door is installed. Judging on this install, it will probably move.

If it were me, that's what I would try instead of realigning the hinges.

thanks Dan, after I knock it into place just screw it in, correct?

Yes, that is correct, just make sure you don't crank the screws too tight or it will probably pull the frame out of alignment if the frame doesn't have shims behind the jamb. And you may want to check the hinge screws to make sure they didn't already put long screws in already. Won't be able to move it if long screws are already installed.

    Hi dan,

took the trim off and it looks like they did nail in the jamb. it is a little off. once I make the side with the hinges level, how would you suggest I make the top part of the jamb square as well to address the door hitting the floor. thanks again for your help!!!

Is that picture of the level from the jamb side? If so it look like you need to push the top hinge side in towards jamb to make plumb. When you do this, it will raise the bottom corner on the opposite jamb. That may be enough to keep from hitting carpet. You will find it difficult to adjust door to where it needs to be without cutting nails and resetting door.

Don't know what the jamb side is. but he sheetrock on the side of the hinges is off as well, but the side of the striker plate isnt. the whole thing is really frustrating and a hot mess, totally ready to give up at this point. I tried pushing in the bottom on the hinge side last night and the door is exactly the same.

yeah , I can imagine this is frustrating. The best thing to do is to reset the door, which means removing the trim all the way around and cut all the nails. Then you can set it properly.

If you dont have the tools, try to find a door installer to fix.

Sorry I cant be more helpful....hard to diagnose on this forum. If you want to try to still fix yourself, then maybe give me a call, it would be easier to talk rather than type. Check my profile for contact info.

thank you Dan. sorry for venting to you about the issue I was just on my last nerve with the whole process. what's weird about the door is the striker plate side is level and they did screw that side into wood shims and the rough frame so cutting nails on that side might make it difficult. I am going to try removing the screws that may go into any shims on the hinge side, shut the door, then push the top or bottom of the frame until the door shuts completely and screw it in place. I may call the maintenance guy for the condo if that doesn't work.

Really do wish your company was here in the northeast, we would hire you guys in a second!

    Hi Dan,

so I move the bottom and top parts of the door in order to get the door to.close how it does now. however the problem is that the door frame now sticks out way too far on both sides as you can see from the picture. Any suggestions?

    thanks and happy new year.

its hard to tell from pics, but it looks like the wood of the door frame doesn't end up flush with drywall on the one side.....is the wood flush or sticking out past the drywall on the opposite side of door?
    Hi dan,
correct. the wood of the frame is flush and level on the opposite side. for some reason the drywall on the wall of the hinge side isn't level around the door. I am thinking of maybe hiring someone to just come and put a new interior door in and have them make sure its level. at this point in kind of stumped as to what else I can do.

hiring a professional is a good plan I think. They might be able to rehang this door or prob best to just buy a new one. When things weren't done properly on the original install, sometimes the easiest way to rectify is to begin anew. Just one of the joys of new homeownership. :)
