I went out shopping for you, cannot believe how crowded the stores are this time of year! lol

I have some different options, so open the mind up wide, most of these are under $150, oh and the chair above is ikea, i know that is reasonable.

this is under $100 and the children might actually enjoy this more.

If it is wood, generally it is sturdy, and you can change out the cushion, it would definitely have a modern feel and the same with metal

this is around a $100 and is for children, takes up less space, coordinated though not identical pillows.a darker gray, though i think it costs more.

a black velvety, bet the kids would love that - not sure it would love them.

loads of fun, 2 different makers, just get a pillow that coordinates them to the couch, i will look, i have hundreds of pillows, i would just paint the legs. I hate them unfinished.

I think if you get the metal or the wood, it becomes totally your option or we could give them a back pillow that contains pink/purple and gray or blk. I do think the purple and pink together are cute and you could still afford the childrens chairs with those if you like.

I suggest you don't purchase furniture online. Go to a furniture store, sit on it, see the quality of fabric and structure.

tedbixby, sofa is a warm gray. I believe it's called "otter," it's a West Elm sofa. I wondered about navy as well but then got worried about introducing another color.

thanks maggie, the wooden is my favorite too. i had a danish modern from my mom, she got when sister was born. lasted til my son grew up, when i moved she got it back. and just so everyone knows the velvet is black not blue. my understanding is there is no blue correct? unless rusty is afraid of wood too?

Nice try Linsey! Another option (without seeing colors live not via interweb) is a deep navy club chair sort of like Susan's twilight blue piece. (FYI: Did you know pink is considered the "navy blue of India") Also having seen my brothers furniture after his kids were done with it a slipcovered piece is something to consider. Some inspiration:

Statement rug w/spare gray and white palette. Accessories are the only other color .

Another rug with solid colored & matched chairs. The only other pattern is carefully coordinated pillows, accessories and wall hanging to make it work .

I think a chair without any pattern looks best here. Get something that has a nice shape and fabric. I love that Kristina Ocean Blue Accent Chair tedbixby posted. A chair in a dark purple velvet would be like entering a purple heaven with your rug, but I don't know how good that is with kids.

If you can wait for the Janaury furniture sales, you will be able to get a better quality chair for the amount you want to spend, but West Elm has a few on sale right now in your price range + they have an extra 15% with a code. The one below comes in a few colors (Leafed Tapestry is nice as it's not as dark as navy but will really compliment your rug and grey couch) and being velvet, it will be durable and you can Scotchguard for even better stain resistance. The Retro chair on their site comes in all kinds of fabrics and is interesting/fun as well. These feel modern and you have so many fabrics to chose from. Good luck.

Your rug will look great with dark blue chairs as can be seen in this photograph, and everything goes with a grey sofa.

Of all the chairs posted, I like the blue stripe more traditional one in your original post best. It contrasts nicely with the rug, and the more traditional styling seems to fit better than more contemporary ones.
