The island would have to be 8 feet to have 4 bar stools in a row. I don't think you have enough space for that if the fridge is positioned like in the picture.

what is it that you like about the picture exactly? What are your must-haves?

I like the L shape kitchen with the island because it is open concept, and I want to be able to see into the great room when I'm cooking. So my must have is the island bar with 4 seats

It appears to me like your island can only be 2 feet wide. Counter, 2 ft, Counter other side 2 feet. 3 1/2 feet around sides of island leaves only a two foot wide island. Is that correct?

The 13 ft. width of the kitchen with counters on both sides doesn't allow for an island with seating. A simple solution would be to make the kitchen 14 ft. wide, which possibly could be taken out of the great room without much impact. Also, I would put the refrigerator in the lower right hand corner and slide the stove up on the plan.

Sorry, I should have said that I wanted to do away with the island as pictured in the house plan and change it to a larger island with an L shaped kitchen. I want it to look very similar to the top picture. Thank you for all the helpful comments!

You can't really do an L-shape and keep the opening to the hallway. What is that niche below the pantry? Perhaps the pantry could be shortened and you could create an entry at the niche along the side wall, but it seems kind of inefficient.

Your architect would need to start removing structural walls in the plan. $$$$ And the whole house itself would need to be larger to have that giant kitchen transposed into it. Otherwise the house would look like a kitchen with a Barbie house hanging off of it.

I'm okay with losing the opening to the hallway if I can have one big island. I still feel like it will be open enough with the L shape.

Does the wall with the stove measure 11' 8" ?

Yes

When preparing meals I spend more time at the cooktop than I do at the sink. I think you would enjoy the room better if the cooktop was on the opposite side of the room. That way you could be stirring things and still interact with people in the great room. If you do find a way to have your island I think the seating should face the great room also.

Some ideas. I think your best bet is closing the hall access (why do you need to go from kitchen to bedrooms with a view into the bathroom, anyway?) and rotating the island.

I really feel closing off the kitchen from the hall and making a solid L makes sense. And, if you want more access to the kitchen from those bedrooms, without having to walk thru the great room, then change the pantry a bit.

Make that pantry area on the entire length of one wall with a hallway from the bedrooms to the laundry area/kitchen. Much better to not have kids with a full laundry basket walking thru the busy kitchen anyway.

The pantry changes to take up that one entire wall, with an opening (hallway) from those three bedrooms to the laundry area. Less traffic by the stove is always good.

I am not very good at reading plans. What kind of wall is currently planned between the kitchen and great room? Seems to me like that could be turned into an open space (even it it needed a load bearing beam across the top) with bar stools on the great room side. Doesn't seem like a very hard thing to do. I do agree with the earlier comment about preferring a stove on that side instead of the sink.
