Good Morning!

I'm going to start today's thread with a design question. In this link, you can see that the homeowner had the granite countertop include the troublesome 4" backsplash. So what do you do for the rest of the backsplash so that doesn't look odd? What if you got glass mosaic tiles that match the backsplash, and some in the next lighter color, and more in the next lightest color and created an ombre effect? A lot of people seem to have this 4" backsplash and it's awkward. Do you think this ombre effect would blend and make it looks good? https://www.houzz.com/discussions/kitchen-remodel-dsvw-vd~356669

Ooops sorry guys, I didn't see the conversation had continued. OK, those chairs come from Designers Guild in London (not mine sadly!). Tricia Guild has very colourful and vibrant designs and last summer she started this dip dyed trend which has become very "in" in the UK at least. I was TRYING to illustrate the wallpaper behind... but apparently you didnt see the paper for the chairs! Anyway that was the ombre idea that Bobbi started!

Astraea - nowadays you can use glass as a countertop, cooktop and backsplash. In my case, I used a stainless steel return over the induction hob. So I am sure it would work behind a hob - but always worth checking for unusual situations. I never take anything for granted these days!

As for the Lion, what a great idea. In various parts of the world, I have seen Geese and Crowned Cranes used as guards. There is no cajoling them into anything and an angry goose waddling at you, hissing with spread wings can be a pretty dissuasive argument!

Sleep well to those who are, and have a great day to those still up!

TK, thanks for your help on that tall wall discussion! Geez, talk about slamming a person's suggestions. Tall walls are tough, aren't they?
Couldnt agree more, they leave you shaking your head. They are great because they make the room feel larger but then what do you do with all the waisted space. I like to embrace it and control it. Comment didn't make sense, especially coming from an individual and not the poster. But if one only wants a professionals opinion then one is always welcome to pay for one.

afternoon ladies and germs! checking in and seeing how everyone is doing today....
beautiful sunny but cool day here in the south. had the weekend off....didn't do too much. but it looks like i will be helping our new neighbor after work. he needs help picking out flooring and paint etc.
saturday morning got on craigslist on the free list and some guy was giving away 50 bags of mulch. what do you think we did??? oh yea, we hopped in the car and loaded that poor jeep down. I think we got 35-40 bags. All we could fit in the jeep with a few on top. :) mulched the front "island" bed and most of the bed to the right front side of the house. Def worth it. Now I just have to buy about 20 bags to finish the front of the house. Then later, early afternoon it started pouring snow! It was the weirdest snow i've ever seen. They were pelting down hard and were tiny little balls of snow, not snowflakes. They would bounce off of you like hail, but it was snow. The ground and roof and cars were covered in no time with white. Lasted about an hour or so. Then just gone. We then went to the animal shelter to see if there were any animals that we couldn't leave. Found a couple of good dogs, but left empty handed. :(

TK, Whoa! I didn't even realize it didn't come from the poster! Good call! Do you think it's easier to dress tall walls, or tall walls with huge windows up high?
Oh I love the big windows for sure. You can do so much with them. After bath is done I plan on moving the rod to the tall windows that are next to the vaulted ceiling in living room and making new curtains to go all the way up for "drama" oooooh. Can you feel it? Lol. Not too much drama though :). The fabric matches the wall color but I'm adding a cream trim to them. The drama is actually me moving the rod. I will probably fall. Which do you prefer, tall walls with windows or tall walls?

Wow MP can't believe he was just giving the bags away! Can't beat that!
Bobb - I read that question about the tall walls, and thought the idea of upper & lower shades of paint was odd; never saw that before, or heard it suggested. There's something to be said for bare space on the upper walls, unless someone wants to paint a tall mural as a focal point.

Dave, it makes me wonder more & more, about the seriousness of people posting, if they don't seem to prepare for projects, ask for help but don't express their own taste, etc. I wouldn't want important aspects of my home decided on by a bunch of people online .. even decorating professionals, without having explained about my tastes & lifestyle.

I agree Dave - and I am still a newbie on here. It is almost like guessing what is required. Right now I still think its fun .... play the game of guess what it is they want - but I can see myself tiring of this preeeetttty quickly. No holiday over here and I have done my Houzzwork and my client work and now onto my apartment work.... Must have been very wicked in a previous life!!!

As an afterthought, I do wish that Houzz would make people at least put the country they are posting from - it makes such a difference when you know that someone's English may not be their first - or that they have different design tastes and challenges. I don't know if that is considered too invasive but I know it would certainly help me to help them.

Ladies and gents! I bought this most awesome stuff from Homey Depot yesterday! And I don't really even know exactly what it is. It's a 4 x 8 sheet of white REALLY heavy vinyl, I think it's for wall paneling tho I can't imagine it. Anyway, my plan for it was to line my kitchen cabinets because let's all face it, Contact paper only sticks to itself. It can be cut with scissors if you don't mind a bruise or two, or it can be cut with a box cutter. Does anyone know what exactly this is?
Umm .. you didn't ask the Homey Depot representatives, before buying it?
    Uh, well, no....... hehehe
Very quick good morning from a beautiful sunny Sydney Town - sorry to rub it in :) Bobbi, I really wonder about you sometimes although if your Homey Depot is anything like ours, finding someone to ask is quite a feat!!!!

mp - I have to ask are you a M*A*S*H* fan? Ladies and Germs???

Dave - you crack me up. I answered one last night, someone had bought a vacation home, no pictures, no nothing and wanted to know how to use a too large living space. Like you, I ask questions to get them thinking for themselves.

Anyway, talking about people wanting colour schemes the night before the painter arrives - mine is here and I'm still agonising over the munchkins' bedroom.
Roo, I used to watch MASH all the time....don't know if that's where I picked that up or not however. ??
Don't agonize! what are your choices? Did you say earlier that you had decided on a green instead of a blue now? And I'm taking it that you got the striped number for the bed???
tras, bobbi, I went to that convo, and not-the-poster said she would like to hear from the professionals as to their opinion on the tall wall..(Remember Annette from Musketeers singing "Tall Paul"?) what are we, chopped liver or pickles or whatever…?
I've given up answering most of the threads... about the only ones I answer are the technical ones. I can't believe how many people will start a project with nothing but some vague ideas and then they get into it and then start asking for help.......and no offense Roo, but I can't believe the number of people who can't even choose a color on their own........come on folks, if you're going to decorate, put on the big boy pants and man up.

Why ask for suggestions from people who; A) have never been in your home and have no idea what you like and what you need but are willing to tell you what color to paint........safe for them, they don't have to live with it, you do. I can understand a question "do you think this blue goes with this brown" or something like that, but most are more like "what color should I paint my door" or "what color should i stain my floor"..........I'm tempted to post and give them some odd answers....."fluorescent neon green, it goes with anything"......

Most are just too lazy to figure it out themselves.........and want someone to lead them around like sheepel.........

mp, Frank and Houlihan were a couple because he was a nerd and an A-hole and she was a nerd A-hole lover. What a pair….and who was on top? Yikes…answer this and I will delete.

mp, hurry up. I don't want my reputation ruined.
    she was on top! ha!

Roo, The point is I don't really care what the vinyl sheets are supposed to be for! I only care that it's something I've been looking for, other than Contact paper, to line my cabinets!

STK, the only good threads are OLLD threads!

So Roo, which is it? the green or the blue?
Bobbi: loved your idea of ombre tiling... I've seen ombre fabric for drapes, hard to find but it is out there...looks amazing..hard to find because fabric does not come off the roll in the sideways direction unless you get it extra wide, and ombre died and swing it sideways...sorry to get onto this topic...but love the ombre! and would love to see someone do this in tile.
Also, I cannot imagine why anyone would split a wall with paint colors like that...it would annoy the hell out of me to look at it.
Kutchie, I take no offense at all because I am just down to two colours and can't make up my mind. The rest have either come to me naturally or I scour Houzz for ideas, drive the guy at the local hardware shop insane and work from there - not exactly rocket science. Just agonising again at the moment, I have had the pillowslip in the room which is presently painted not quite the right shade of blue and then I took it into my bedroom which is not quite the right shade of green but the fireworks really went off. I finally found a very pale blue sample that is right, but it just does nothing for me. However, I have a green sample that is pretty right but I think I would like it a little lighter so am just about to whip up the shop and pick up a sample pot. I'm sure had I put an open question on here I would have had navy walls (room way too small) a red feature wall (not me) all white which doesn't work in my home for some reason, and every shade of grey. I'm trying to keep to a yellow, green and blue colour scheme through the house and I think I was trying too hard to make this room blue to have the blue at this end of the house. It means I will now have 3 green bedrooms, two the same and the third different but compatible, one yellow room and the hall a paler shade of the yellow.

I'm afraid I have taken to asking people have they trolled Houzz for basic ideas.

Yes MP I did get the striped number.

    Sorry, gotta go.
Roo, do blue and green stripes!

Want to know what the weather is like here right now?

The wind began to switch - the house to pitch
and suddenly the hinges started to unhitch

I'm pretty sure I just saw my neighbor fly by!!!

Bobbi, you had a tremor ?
Ah, no, we're not on a fault line. At least that's what our Realtor tried to convince us of, but I think California is one big fault line. It's just incredibly windy today, huge and scary gusts!!! Kinda neat and kinda scary! But a tremor would be fun, too......
Julie, fabric that comes off the roll in the opposite way of usual, is that called railroad?
  • PRO
Yes Bobbi, it is....you can do it for drapes on fabrics that are 118" wide and higher, providing your ceilings are not higher than 8 or 9 ft. I know there are 2 companies out there doing ombre for fabrics, apart from dyeing your own.

If you did the ombre tile yourself you would have to avoid straight line demarcation between colors..ie "feather" the edges.
I could see it on a larger scale in a shower even.
Ah Julie, the things I learned from Tommy Smythe - boob lights and railroaded fabric :)) I think this effect would work better with glass tile than it would with ceramic tile because the glass colors are more muted, no? And I wonder if a brick pattern would work better than a stacked pattern, or vice versa? This is interesting, thanks for your input!

And then if we get really clever, we could tie dye some tiles......Ok maybe not.
Ok, I have to admit, I was never a fan of MASH. I tried a couple of times but never got into it. Kind of funny considering our military family / extended family and I love most military movies. Just never got into the show. I know, I'm like one out of 1Million who didn't watch.

Dorothy, I mean Bobbi :), have you seen the trailer for the new OZ? What do you think?
TK, I haven't seen it but I heard Johnny Depp is in it? Anything with Johnny Depp or Matt Damon can't be all bad!!!
Back - BH was waiting to go to our Homey but didn't want to leave the painter on his own so I had to dash out first.

Bobbi - Tooo funny, but now I have a painter I guess I could and separate them with a stripe of red - hehehe. I can feeeeeeel your creative juices flowing - keep it up at this rate I will win the bet :)

Weather - we have beautiful clear blue skies, so I walked out to go to the shop and it is pouring rain!!! Definitely wasn't a flock of kookaburras, but it only lasted a couple of minutes. How is the chimney, hope the wind is blowing the wrong way.

So tell me more about the Homey stuff you got? Is it stiff like a thin piece of timber or is it like fabric you can cut? Reason I ask is that I have to re-do my linen cupboard shelves. Currently wallpapered but a after 40 years I figure they have earned a change. Wall paper no longer available like it used to be, I used to buy $3.50 a roll oddments, Contact defintely out, I find it shrinks, so I mostly Estapol mine, which is like a clear poly and it works a treat, and very easy to wipe over and clean. Now I'm wondering if you are onto something, would you glue it down??

So I now have two sample pots of a pale green, one has ochre in it and the other black and I'm thinking the black will give the really fresh sharp green I want. About to put it on and will take some photos.

You know how they did that piece on here the other week about silly paint colour names, well I was wading through the atlas of paints and found a good one - Viagra!!! It was an even more revolting shade of Baby Nappy Yellow.

Judy, my only though on Frank and Margaret was he was pathetic and she desperate. I just loved the things Hawkeye and Trapper did to them. Radar was my favourite though, I reckon he brought out the mother in everyone. I have the entire series on DVD and regularly run them, I never tire of it. Everyone in it had such strongly defined characters, I think that was what made it. I wonder if Klinger's part would be considered politically correct these days.
No Johnny Depp, unfortunately. It stars James Franco, Mila Kunis and Rachel Weisz. When you sited the lyrics, it made me think of how bummed I was when I saw the trailer. I love The Wizard of Oz and would great a kick out of seeing a modern day twist on it but when I saw the trailer I wasn't so excited anymore. :(

I'm with you, love Johnny Depp and Matt Damon on screen. Favorite so far is Depp as Jack Sparrow and Damon as Jason Bourne.

Roo! Blue and green vertical stripes, red horizontal! hehehe You know, I really don't know how to describe this vinyl stuff any better. It's called wall panel; I would never put it on my walls! It can be cut with scissors but I think if you have a rotary cutter you'd have fewer blisters. It's wonderful for lining shelves because it's PERMANENT and scrubbable.

Roo/Bobbi - The folks at our Homey Depots run the gamut, from the totally clueless about products & their usage, to highly skilled & helpful folks who’ve landed there for a variety of reasons. I’ve had experiences where I had to hunt for a tool myself, because their person had no idea what it looked like or was stocked, to having someone help me find just the right size piece of scrap lumber, and cut 2 pieces for me .. at no charge; when the lumberyard guy acted like he didn’t know what I wanted to do!

    S. Thomas – I often wonder that about people posting such vague or global questions here. In house hunting, I saw a bunch of houses that were perfectly decorated .. just not for me!
Astraea, agreed! The Homey Depot paint dept has two wonderfully knowledgeable workers, couldn't do it without them and wouldn't even want to try! But once I went to the tool dept and asked for a nail set and they handed me a container with ass't nails.
Our Home Depot is great, love it. I've come to know a couple of the people working and they are always great help. If there's a new person, sometimes the help needs a little help :). Lowes on the other hand is not so great! The only time I had a good experience there was when I ordered my wood, but it was a manager that helped me. I think every location is different. The lowes by my brother in law is much better. And, the Home Depot by my dad is not so good. The Benjamin Moore store here is fabulous! Rob, the manager, is always ready to help and knows just the paint for the application. Anymore good customer service really stands out, probably because there's so much bad service you really appreciate the good.
Bobbi - Last time I went to Homey Depot, there were 4 employees standing standing around the self-service check-out, to help if anyone came by. The store was empty .. why not assign them to actually work the cash registers. I shop in a lot of stores; I honestly don't care to learn how the checkout equipment works in each one .. do it for me!
