We must all be very busy, because it's pretty quiet here on the forum (except for Karen who posted her lovely quilt).

I'm following the quilt I mailed to France on Monday. It has left Paris and is on the plane to Nice. Amazing!

My first great-nephew was born yesterday, and I am waiting to get confirmation on his name so I can sew the label on his quilt and get that in the mail before we leave for Hawaii on Tuesday. They're 99% sure it will be Mateo, but that's not quite good enough for me to hit the "print" button.

I'm about to jump into the shower to get ready for Christmas Eve at my brother's house. Then brunch at my daughter's tomorrow and the Christmas movie late on Christmas Day. We're going to see "Brooklyn," which has had really good reviews. This is the 35th year we have gone to a movie on Christmas Day. Saturday, we celebrate with my husband's family - 10 sibling's, 9 of whom still live in town, along with their kids and grandkids. There's usually about 50 or so.

It's a traditional Holiday dish, I got the recipe from a genuine French Canadian. There are different versions but I always make this one. Believe it or not, it's traditional also to eat it with some ketchup on it. Here's my recipe:

Pork Pie (this recipe makes 2 pies)

1/2 lb. ground beef

1/2 lb. ground pork

1 chopped onion

1 clove garlic, minced

1 Tbs. bell's seasoning

1 tsp. celery seed

2 tsp. salt

1 tsp. pepper

1 tsp. crushed red pepper

1/2 tsp. cloves

2 tsps. beef boullion

1 cup hot water

1 lb. diced potatoes, cooked and mashed with 3 Tbs. butter

4 pie crusts

Directions: brown ground meat, add onion and garlic, saute until soft. Add all seasonings, spices and boullion dissolved in hot water. Simmer very low until almost all the liquid is gone. In the meantime, cook the potatoes and mash them with butter. Add to meat mixture and blend well. Pour into 2 pie crusts, top with remaining 2 pie crusts. Bake for 10 minutes at 425, then lower to 350 and bake for 45 more minutes. Use your favorite crust recipe, - I use one that calls for half and half shortening and butter.

I always make this the day before then heat it back up for the Christmas dinner.

Same back to you and all. I made pies from 8 o'clock this morning until 1 today. 2 pumpkin, 1 pecan and 2 French Canadian pork. DH called and said don't bother planning to cook dinner (woo-hoo) because office luncheon had food to send home. (I threw the steaks into the freezer so fast!) I asked him to stop at the store and bring eggs (I forgot how many I'd be using for the pies) and some kind of rolls for tomorrow. I was going to bake home-made ones but as warm as it is here in Florida this year it was brutal to be in the mood for making all those pies, much less making home-made yeast rolls. I did manage to make 2 different batches of cookies day before yesterday but didn't want to. I might be doing some piecing but probably not much. I changed my mind about what to do next and decided to do the double square star block design that was on the Missouri Star Quilt site recently. I was going to do the block that Pat Sloan put out for a mystery quilt and got tired of fiddling with re-sizing it for what I thought I wanted to do. Maybe later when my mind isn't full of gotta-dos.

Rita, what is a French Canadian pork pie? It sounds scrumptious.

The pie is also known as Tourtiere. Lots of recipes online . My mother made these every year and I have been doing it also since she died 30 years ago . Cant have christmas dinner without meat pie. I usually serve it with homemade chili sauce. Your recipe is very similar except we also use sage as a seasoning.

Ladies, that sounds so good. I had to look up Bell's seasoning, because I had never heard of it. Thanks so much for the recipe, Rita. All these traditional holiday meals are so fun to hear about. Being Italian on my mother's side, my family always had lasagna for Christmas Eve dinner, which was when we celebrated. In fact, we had some tonight, although my brother made it since my parents are gone.

Mom always prepared Chop Suey for when the family got together.......only a memory now. :-) I made Pork Pies a few years ago and really liked them. This post makes me want them again.......will have to go to the store soon. lol

I usually make about ten or twelve at a time and keep them in the freezer. A good meal on those nights when you just don't know what to make for supper.

Merry , Merry to all!

Christmas day is quiet here, with it being just DH and me today. We'll have a little Christmas, catch a movie and this year grill a duck, with some wild rice and fresh veggies. Full Christmas mayhem this year will be on Sunday when we catch up with my niece and nephews, along with their children and celebrate Christmas with the family.

I may sneak some sewing in on Saturday, if I can get my room back to normal after Christmas wrapping....its chaos at the moment!

thank you for posting the recipe...believe it or not, I don't believe I've ever had a meat pie....something new to try! My mother was 100% Polish, so it was periogies and sausage/sauerkraut as the traditional side dishes. I do miss the homemade periogies!
