Whenever my basil starts to act wonky, I always cut it down,and it grows back beautifully. I have had the same basil plant in the same pot for 10 years. Many times it has looked just like your picture. Works every time. Maybe it just needs a reboot. Also lay off the fertilizer. It may do harm than good if the plant is sick.

I would take cuttings of the three woody stems on the center of the picture. I took one woody cutting about a week ago and the roots are growing like mad in a tiny vase on my windowsill.

Ohh ok! How much should I cut it down by? To propagate the woody stems, do I need to add any growth hormone? Or do I just put it in water? I thought the cutting would require leaves to provide the energy for the plant to grow its own roots?

I would take a 6 inch cutting of the woodiest stems. They root quickly in water. No hormones or fertilizer necessary. I would leave about 4 big leaves on it. Put it in a bright to sunny window. I did one two weeks ago and it has enough long roots to put it into a pot.

amylou321 I know this post is old so I'm just taking a shot asking in case you run across this but I'm impressed that you can keep a basil alive for so long! Silly question. Does it taste good after all this time? Mine grow outdoors and even if I try to keep it from bolting it eventually just tastes bitter.
