Check out designer projects on Houzz, to see if you gravitate towards subtle tone on tone rugs versus rooms with a pattern on the rug.

If you find yourself saving photos of subtle rugs, you'll know those appeal to you. If you always save the room photos showing rugs with a pattern, then you probably like those better.

One advantage of subtle rugs is it makes it easy to introduce just about anything though the years --- art, pillows, etc.

Last but not least, a small sample square in the room doesn't really help people visualize as much as finished room photos.

I like the rug.

I too like the rug very much. But i also get where trans is coming from. Do you want this rug to in essence become your show piece, do you want to decorate around it? If you go with something less patterned it will allow you to change with the times, even the seasons if you desire. the world is your oyster when it comes to colors and patterns, just change a few pillows, maybe your curtains and a whole new look. With this rug as beautiful as it is, many colors would be hard pressed to be introduced.

That's a great rug and I think it will be perfect in your space. I have the same sofa pillows. Love them.

I love the rug with your sofas and chair. I would paint the walls a soft gray/blue color. Make sure you get the proper size rug for your room. I usually have the carpet placed 1' to 2' away from the wall all the way around - depending on the size of the room. The smaller the carpet, the smaller it makes the room appear. It's an optical illusion.

Thanks for the suggestions. havingfun, your questions are the same ones I am wondering about. I am waffling between a neutral textured rug (wool/sisal or jute) or a patterned one (Nolan from PB). Checking out Fibreworks website now.

Alexander Interiors, I like the idea of repainting these walls. Currently BenMoore Dunmore Cream. The living room is large and I agree with the rug sizing you suggest. I would go with a 10x14 rug. If I keep the Nolan rug, I know have to decide on accent pillow colors and window treatments! This is not easy:)

Don't second guess yourself. Go with the Nolan rug - it will help to ground the space. That sisal look is out and is impractical besides. I can't tell what colors are in the Nolan rug by the photo. Is that blue or gray accent I'm seeing in the corners? If blue - go with the blue gray walls Pillows and draperies should be a darker value of the wall color. Do simple side panels mounted on each side of the window covering the window casing but not the glass. Have blinds or shades underneath.

Colors in the Nolan rug are light bluish grey, darker blue, taupe, creamy white. I like the idea of panels with blinds underneath. Thanks again for your help!

I too vote against sisal or jute, I only meant a more monotone rug or one of those solid color shags. I have no problem with that current rug, just that one question. So what have you decided? I would be happy to help with a more neutral if you like, or can we just go for the pillows to go with it?

Depending on the shade of blue in the Nolan carpet, take a look at the Pottery Barn Dupioni silk drapery panels in Lagoon. I suggest a variety of pillows such as pillow cover Mansfield Print in blue, Moroccan wedding blanket pillow cover for a heavy texture, introduce an accent color like Kalimkari Printed Medallion pillow cover, and plainer patterns like Embroidered pillow cover in blue or red (depending how well the color blends with the other pillows, and Embellished Monogrammable Pillow, and a solid or two.

I had assumed you would mix some of these with your solid colors, no?

Depends on the colors. I'd keep the pillows in blues, reds and beige.
