It's a little hard to say only seeing a single photo and not knowing anything else about the room, but large walls like that usually go in large spaces. Often these spaces can be very acoustically reverberant (echo). If that's the case, I'd suggest a beautiful tapestry or fabric treatment above the fireplace. Find something that looks beautiful, that will also make the room sound more intimate.

I agree with the wall tapestry. Antique wall hangings (or something that looks antique) goes well with a "world traveller" vibe...especially if it is an ethnic based tapestry.

Even a really beautiful persian rug hung on a dowel would be pretty

I believe in keeping decor at "living" level (the lower 8 feet of a space,) but if you want to go with something higher, try hanging fabric for some color and interest.
