My Mother-In-Law was diagnosed with CO in her system. Gas company came out and found the gas (Heat N Glo) FP in the bedroom was "pouring out" Carbon Monoxide. So was the gas fireplace in the living room although not as bad. They shut the gas off.

In-laws called a HVAC company (because fireplace companies we reluctant to service it) and they claim the gasket on the glass door is bad. We are not filled with confidence in this HVAC company. Long story there. He put some silcone to seal it and gas company came back to find it still leaking.

HVAC co. claim a new glass panel is the best option at $500.

MIL wants to replace the whole fireplace instead of just repairing the glass.

This seems like an expensive and extreme option to me. Pulling the old one out without busting up the tile and mantel and installing a new one seems labor intensive. No price quotes yet.

What would you do?

In my mind, these boxes should be totally sealed and fed with outside air. NOTHING should be leaking out into the house. What else could be causing it. The HVAC guy "claims" he checked the outside vent.

Our Biggest concern is for CO safety. She runs that fireplace all the time (for heat). We don't want them to get ripped off by a fireplace salesman.
