Check with local building codes. The 24" door would be uncomfortably narrow, and there'd be very little space to stand in the toilet room when opening the door. Think about similar size spaces in public restrooms for comparison.

But don't public restrooms have to be ADA compliant? My home does not. I know the door swing may be an issue but I can't see how a 24" door would be too narrow, unless someone larger was using the room. As it is the master bath would only be my husband or I, that wouldn't be a problem.

I live in an old home, in and area where almost every home is 100+ years old. I think our building codes must not be standard for the rest of the country. They tuck powder rooms and toilet rooms in unimaginably small spaces here. 3' x 5' is positively huge!

The room is almost your size and the door opening ended up be 26". Worked.

I wish I could but the toilet room is on an exterior wall, and the other side is the shower.

Always have the hinges on the outside so there is emergency access.

only the large stall in a rest room is ADA compliant.....the rest are a tight squeeze and some you feel like you need to stand on the toilet to get in and out.

The only fixture in the toilet room is a toilet, a regular sized one, not elongated. It is within a master bath that has a double vanity and walk in shower. Overall the bath is 7.5' x 12.5'. It's a nice size. The room is gutted and I have the toilet room taped off-it seems so big to me.

I'm finalizing and laying everything out with the contractor Monday. I love having a chair in the bath. If the toilet room swings out it will make that a bit awkward.

You should definitely look into that. For our jobs the building department has required all new doors to be 32" minimum.

The International Residential Code does not require a bathroom door, or any door other than the ONE egress door to the outside of the house to be any minimum size.

Neither does California, unless it falls under the scope of accessibility, aka ADA.

Single family detached dwellings are not required to be ADA compliant.

Sometimes depending on the circumstances you could use a bid-fold door. Just saying...LOL!

Try blocking off one of your other doorways so that the 24" door would fit - look at a current door to see how much space the door will take up when open, maybe 1.5 inches to 2 inches of that 24" space. Then go in and out a few times to see if you like it.

Water closet compartments shall be not less than 30 inches (762 mm) in width and not less than 60 inches (1524 mm) in depth for floor- mounted water closets and not less than 30 inches (762 mm) in width and 56 inches (1422 mm) in depth for wall- hung water closets.

Since you have an extra 6" in width, it may be wise to hold the toilet over to one side (15" from side wall) to give a little more room to shut the door.

I dislike cramped spaces. If I had a beautiful bathroom, I would not want to just pass through it to head for claustrophobic toilet room - and find I was out of TP. I am strongly in favor though of people styling their homes to their own liking:)

I've lived in this bathroom for 7 years without a toilet room! I am redesigning it around adding one, I love them. Every nice hotel I've ever stayed in has one. For me not making the toilet the center of the room makes such a difference.

I can't believe I didn't think of offsetting the toilet! That is the perfect solution. My contractor had actually mentioned I could shrink the toilet room to 30" x 60" if I really needed to-instead I can make use of those inches.

Of course you can have a 24" door swung into the room. Please center the toilet on the wall so you can hang art above. My powder room is 36" x 66" or so with the door swinging in, otherwise the toilet would be on view from the living room. No one thinks twice about it. Only my plumber complained!

Maybe instead of offsetting the toilet, just snugging the door over to one side would suffice?

I have a water closet, 30" x 60" with a 24" inswing door. It is much too crowded.

Doors can not encroach into the 21"clearance required by code for a person to be able to stand ,approach or sit wit proper knee clearance. If this happens door must swing out or install pocket door or barn style door. I've been inspecting buildings for over 20 years.
