Both of mine do it and sometimes my mini schnauzer does it when he hops up into a chair!! I have to tell him "no digging to China". They both do it in bed. And I can always count on my Havanese to dig, get settled, get up, dig, get settled, get up, over and over until I tell her "just lay down"!!!! I think I heard once what it was about, but I've forgotten. I guess it is called "nesting", isn't it??

Oh wow, I'm glad that's one ritual my 70lb lab hasn't started doing. Her nails have torn up the back yard, I could only imagine what they would do to her bed!

Mimipadv, you just reminded me of our family dog, back in the day, would take his biscuit and go into the dining room and "bury" it in the shag carpeting!! LOL I can still see him nosing and nosing that carpet, trying to cover the biscuit!! Here is a picture of my buddy, Charlie, and he is even laying on that awful shag carpet!!!

They scratch and turn in circles to get rid of pests and make a comfy nest.

One time I read that they do it because they like to lay along the magnetic field of north to south. I can remember chuckling but forgot and never did pay attention to my dogs to see if they lie in that position. lol Tonight I'll try and keep an eye out for that. :)

Mine do not lay the same position and I know b/c petting them good night is the next to last thing I do every night and I've noticed.

A ha! That explains why my girl takes her pocket compass out and checks North-South prior to retiring. Who knew?
