I too live on dows prairie road. I won't keep you, but one thing I was looking to find out is whether anybody in this area had tried growing figs.

You know, Seasideroses, I have been thinking about figs big time lately. Miller's had some good looking ones. Only problem I see is with gophers. I plan on putting them in large containers and eventually into raised beds such as the ones I use in the vegetable garden for garlic.

I am sorry to have been so flippant in my first reply and I would love to strike up a conversation about gardening with you anytime. Wondering if a tows specific thread on this site is as good as something on fb? Shall we brainstorm?

supposedly a good fig for pnw is called "desert king" (go figure that name); it is available in the raintree nursery catalog. the only other one that seems eligible is the "chicago hardy", also at raintree; will have to check miller farms for those. So, you think it would make it here? Yes, due to gophers everything I plant is either in a "gopher cage" (which I make) or in a raised bed or a big pot.

Do you have severe sun problems? To add to already sparse sun, our neighbor to the south has tall pine trees, which block the sun altogether during the winter and quite a bit even in summer.

What is a tows? I am not on facebook or any other social sites, other than google I guess. Email could always work, which would be easier, more direct, and enable us to share photos, etc. Mine is (use my username with @suddenlink.net).

I am one of two people who plant trees in my immediate neighborhood and so I enjoy full sun except where I have over-landscaped. Need a bunch of lower limbs removed from the large forest trees lining my fence line.

Do not understand what I was trying to say, don't know what a "tows" is---ahh, short term memory that is truly short term here. I will email you.

I've also been thinking the possibility of figs and a friend in Coos Bay mentioned the Olympia fig.....sounds encouraging

I checked with a small nursery here that orders from T & L wholesale in Washington and she's ordered the Olympian fig and I think she may have said the Desert King also.......going in to pick up an Olympian when the order comes in in 3 weeks...maybe I should get a Desert King also ? (if that's the other one she said she ordered, I think so)

The nursery's shipment is supposed to come in the first week of May...so, barring any unforeseen, etc., etc....They're only getting one gallon size, but figs grow fast, so....hoping they really do bear here.
