Should Kitchen cabinet color match oak on stairwell?

The stairwell in foyer has oak color rail as well as the catwalk overlooking the great room which opens up into kitchen and dinette area. There will be white crown molding throughout home. Is it okay to have a different color or stain on kitchen cabinets? What wall color will look good in the kitchen and dinette with the gray walls in great room. The color is now a brown although it looks yellow.
