If it's his space, why do you care? Let him do what he wants and shut the door. Keep your input confined to the public spaces and your personal space.

Are black and gold general army colors? I thought they were USMA school colors?

Depending on where you live and your social circle, I think decorating the entertainment area in West Point colors might be a little off-putting to some people. I understand he had a 33 year career in the army, but some people won't understand and are going to see it as your husband bragging about where he went to school three decades ago. Especially when there is literally a bragging wall. Obviously, this totally depends on where you are and who you hang out with. Also, I may be misunderstanding the significance of the colors.

I would consider change the color of the back of the bookcases / display area to a taupe that would complement the fireplace color.

If he envisions the space as an army memory space, you may wish to incorporate some "army green".

I like the idea if adding some green. 33 years; 12 deployments and 10 moves gives him bragging rights. We live in the DC area and the majority of our friends and family have served as well. The basement is large and this is only a portion of it..
