I would take the blanket off the sofa against the wall and hang it diagonal on the back of the other sofa. Does that make sense? Will break it up some.

The couches are already very far away from the ways. I may move the couches back to show the other options.

Love your space especially your rug and that pop of coral in the pillow. Find another coral and blue pillow. Check out thepillowcollection.com Now for your question, if you get some sunlight there, you may be able to add a plant in a pretty pot or a grouping of large baskets however those things would also take up space. It's just trial and error until you hit upon something that softens the back of the sofa the way throw pillows soften the front side.

As I'm studying the space some more, I think that if the (longer) sofa was facing the fireplace/TV, then it could be placed a couple feet closer in to that wall too.

That could also open up the (walkway) space some more....and allow for a narrow (12"-18" in width?) console table to be placed behind it. Then it may not feel as/so crowded at that space between the island and living area.

Do you have a photo of that configuration you could post?

You have a great space. To my eye, your second arrangement is almost spot on. I would pull the sofa and loveseat a bit closer together. They should be 16-18" away from the coffee table. This give you the perfect opportunity to add a console table to the wall under your painting. You could then add a lamp or two for extra lighting. It looks as though you would then have room for a small scale chair where the loveseat used to be.

Some ideas....potentially, if you would consider a console table....maybe something like an acrylic table, that doesn't take up as much "visual space", yet could allow for you to add some dimension and allow some accessories, etc. to dress up the back of the sofa a little more.

Pic 3 shows another idea for a lower table and/or bench to be placed behind a sofa. The last is just an idea of how a narrow, lighter-in-visual-weight console table may be just enough to dress things up a bit too.

Anyway, just a few suggestions....hope it helps!

Thanks Avery, those are good suggestions. I do like the idea of a console table but am worried about it being over furnished. I will consider it if we decide to keep the love seat facing tv.

I agree with avery - try the sofa opposite fireplace and loveseat against the wall.

Could you try just wildly floating the sofas in the space, so far from the walls as to look perfectly intentional? Imo this arrangement looks exceptionally natural for the space.

This is a beautiful space. If it were mine, I'd leave the coffee table as you have it in the first, main photo, and I'd put the three seat sofa facing the fireplace. Given the length of the coffee table, the long edge of the table would be in better proportion.

Then I'd put the love seat either on the window wall or the wall where the sofa now sits. This too would be in better proportion to the actual length of the wall, would allow for the sofa to be pulled in closer toward the fireplace/coffee table, and would make it possible to put a console table with lamps; thus, providing a lovely and more intimate light source, while creating a natural divide between the kitchen and family room, but still allowing breath ability in the rooms.

I would even be tempted to put the love seat at a right angle to the sofa, and put the end table in that intersection. The short end of the coffee table would service the love seat nicely. And A chair in the opposite corner of the love seat still seems appropriate for the space. The painting that hangs in the room may need to be adjusted, but this arrangement would also lend itself to adding artwork to flank the recessed area at the side of the fireplace.

Hmm interesting that many of you say to put couch facing the fireplace. I do agree with the proportions but feel I will be looking at more grey couch. I have pulled everything off the wall more and had guests and they were wondering why everything was so far away from the walls. Lol! It will look better with sofa table behind. I guess I can't win and may never be satisfied with this space.

I agree with @tems. Definitely put the sofas facing each other. And let them get all the way on to the rug. You could put a console table with lighting behind one or both of the couches and then impertinent guests won't wonder why there is space behind the sofas; they'll just appreciate being able to converse without hallooing across the vast distance. ;)

Definitely put them facing each other, but pulled in closer together. Then put a console table behind the loveseat with lamp etc on it. Im with Tems it looks much better facing each other. I am not a fan of L shaped arrangements and feel seating should always be facing over L shaped when the space allows which in your case it certainly does!

so I agree with whoever up there said put love seat on wall to left, sofa facing fireplace, then end table between sofa and love seat to make a L shaped seating area. Try this and post a picture! I think it would look great. Then I would go to like Overstock or something like that and buy a skinny sofa table (10-12 inches in depth) and put that behind the sofa. That way it won't take up too much walking space but will give you room to decorate a little and provide relief from the back of the sofa!

If this is your main TV room, I agree with flipping the sofa and loveseat and adding a console table behind the sofa so you are looking at the table rather than the back of the couch.

If this room is more fireplace and less TV, I like the two pieces looking at each other.

I love your room :) I had a similar problem. I angled my sectional. Maybe you could angle your couch from window with sofa table behind it and put your love seat where couch is now. I'm not sure how to put your rug...I don't have one :)

Thank you all for your advice! I switched the love seat and sofa position. It looks much more proportional to the space and is very functional. Since I love cuddling with my baby, I added a nest chair in this fun color. What do you think? Now the next project is to decide what goes on the walls by fire place. Thoughts? The ceiling is 9ft.
