The tile you selected is regularly used with real granite like your laminate...

I do like the sparkle look of the subway tile but I do like the look of the glass/stone tile. Maybe combine them?

Keep it simple like the pic Mia posted. Your countertops have a lot going on, and there is something else adding to the area visually: The dishwasher and sink both jump out to the eye. That is why you should consider keeping the backsplash more simple. If your sink were undermount stainless, and your dishwasher was "hidden" you could get away with a bit more pizazz in the backsplash.

I would prefer the glass subway tile, too, due to the busyness of your granite. You could do a stripe of the sample backsplash tile in the photo you show, through the glass subway tile, as an accent. You'd have the best of both worlds!

Would the lighter color subway tile cause another area of confusion for the eye, along with the sink and dishwasher?

Oh, I should mention that I'm just not a "gray" person... I know, I know...it's all the rave! Just not for me.

I would go to the tile place and get samples of: the color of your sink, the lighter color in your counter, and maybe one of the darker shades in your counter (not the really dark!). Where I live, they give us 2 or 3 of each to try at home, and hold them up.

Something like this would look nice, less busy.

Too busy. Adding a backsplash on top of the 4" just won't look right. You might inquire about cutting it off but I wouldn't put another one on top.

If it can be removed then go with one of Mia's recommendations.

I think leelee means the 4 inches of counter top that goes up the back wall.

Just one more take on your first tile choice..instead of thinking busy..think unifying..it does have all the colors and sort of ties them all together in a unifying element...sometimes in the end ...your first choice turns out to be the right one...it may require less clutter on your countertops to look it's best .however...

Here's what I have gleaned by this little experiment...we all have our preferences. For me, I like color and movement, hubby does not. He likes plain and simple. My kitchen isn't going to make on any magazine cover so it's basically what we want to see every morning and night. I'm really leaning towards the original tile, if I can find enough to finish the project. Local store has discontinued it. Note to self...buy what you need immediately. Lol!
