Between those two options, definitely the white. I agree with the others that something is off with the gray (though they're very pretty curtains). If you are asking about these ones vs. another white option, I think these are great. Something else that is sheer enough for light to come through and has some texture would also be fine. You can't go wrong either way. Getting close - can't wait to see the final!

I recently put up white linen curtains in my living room and I very much like them. I have the privacy I want, but the light still filters through.

Thanks all - I definitely agree that the white is a better fit than the gray. I am pretty sure I'm going to stick with them. I like the weight of the curtain but also that the light really does come through nicely. That is hugely important to me with this room. They are a soft cotton texture, quite nice. And almost 1/4 of the price of the RH linen drapes I had been looking at. Soooooo..........

I wish I had better pics to post but it's a bit tricky getting the pole to stay up on the window frame.

I think these white ones will be a great choice. All the RH stuff is so darn expensive, isn't it? I have a few items from there and I do love them, but not the prices!

HELP!! Hi all - I'm back & need serious help with these drapes. We got distracted with other major projects and just got around to hanging the one set of curtains and I'm really not loving it at all. I'm trying to decide if it's the curtains, the cellular shade, or all of it that I don't like. I attached picks with shade down and up. It looks awful at night with the shade down and drapes open (which was the plan). We do definitely need to replace the shades at some point.

It is really hard to get a full sense because we are also in the middle of Christmas decorating (I apologize for the mess) but I'm hoping to get some thoughts. I'm really rethinking the whole curtain idea in this room.

Sorry - I haven't read the entire thread, but do you need the curtains for privacy? I would prob just embrace the clean lines of the shades....

Sooooo happy to see this room again, and love getting Christmas glimpses, too!

Seems like the panels are too full right now and I think they are all the way to the edge of the window or as close as possible, right? Can you pinch them together so they are not so full? Does that make sense?

Hi again - so I was able to take some pics with the tree out of the room (still a mess but a bit more accurate). @TGB1 - actually you were one info the people that recommended skipping the drapes and going with a woven wood shade only (which I do like the idea of).

@abbyjean - I'm not sure I can make it much more crunched up.

Now that I see this I think that might be best.
I am really trying to like this but I really don't think I do. Should I consider a lighter drape or just get rid of the drape all together and go with a woven shade?

Cmcole, I had drapes in my dining room. They were silk ones from Restoration Hardware and pretty expensive (with the rod, finials, and all). After Houzzers nudging me, I finally took them down and I recently replaced them with a nice Roman shade and I'm so glad I did. Have you considered Roman shades?

Hi @ann - my only issue is I need to ensure that whatever I put on the windows does not block light during the day. This room gets little natural light which is one of the reasons I like the idea of a woven wood shade. Otherwise a Roman shade might be nice. I also like the wood idea because it adds some texture without a pattern.

I took a pic of the window at night with the shade pulled. It's hard to get a sense of it from so close and with the tree/candle but I really hate the way it looks. I think it's mostly because of the shade but don't like how the drapes look either.

I know this is a really long thread but anyone interested in seeing the room without drapes can just scroll up a few comments to see pics.

So far those that have commented have been very nice in the comments but definitely seem to be advocating no on the drapes. Any other thoughts?

CMcole, I think it would look a little better if the drapes weren't so long. They need to be hemmed so they are about 1/2 to 1 inch above the floor. Then they will hang better. If you were trying for the puddled look, then they should have been longer.

Agree with Nancy. The drapes are not hanging properly because they are just a little too long. They should skim the floor and not touch it.

I'm so happy this thread is back! I've missed this room. I agree the current cellular shades aren't working. A simple Roman in a beautiful linen fabric would add the texture you crave. (I love woven shades but they will darken the room.)

As for the length - I appreciate the input and if I decide to keep curtains I will certainly consider. At his point I'm still trying to determine if I want to stick with curtains or not so I won't be helming anything yet. Do you have a thought on curtains or no?

The drapes you chose are beautiful. They should overlap the window trim only slightly though and should clear the radiator. So if you keep them, I would extend the rod a little. And the other windows should be treated the same. How much room do you have between yours window and the fireplace?

To clarify, I would do either the drapes or the linen Romans. Not both.

I like where you are going in terms of your furniture, however I think that the glassed coffee desk makes the living room awkward. I would suggest including any other coffee desk and placing a white fur rug underneath the desk.

Wow what a great thread and a great room! Although this is months old and you've probably solved it, I am wondering if my thoughts are on base or off base: I think part of the problem with the curtains is the rod is too harsh there and looks odd in the middle just sticking there above the window and then there's a space between it, the molding, and the shade. It looks very unfinished. I'd like to see how it looks with the curtains pulled together in the middle and then on holdbacks. Alternately, how would one curtain per window look, but pulled across to one side and on a hold back? Another idea is to top it with "napkins" that go with your pillows, or change the black rod to a softer gray/nickel/cream/ceramic/glass type thing?

Hi friends! So it has been a few years since I posted on this room And I wanted to share an update. I ended up removing the curtains and going with a woven shade. They were just installed and I love them! I now am really thinking about switching out the rug. What do u think about the attached rug from Joybird. I really love it and am trying to figure out if it would work in my LR. I would probably need to bring in some more orange or coral accents.

Also Now that the curtains are not happening I need to finalize what artwork/photos I will hang on the wall (either side of front window). love to hear your thoughts are on my room & especially the rug.

I love the new window coverings!!!!! I actually think I prefer the current rug a bit more than the proposed rug. There are two things I'd remove altogether (and not replace) - the little buffet lamp on the dresser to the right of the window and the large vase of yellow flowers on the floor in the far corner of the room (to the left of the fireplace). I think the scale of the buffet lamp looks odd with the other three nice sized lamps in the room and I think the floor vase with yellow flowers kind of looks like unnecessary clutter in that particular spot.

By the way, it's wonderful to see this thread pop up in my feed and see this nice and inviting room again!

Hi again! I love the new rug. It gives the room just the right amount of complementary color, rather than the monochromatic. I would also like to see those yellow flowers go into a different room. The shelving unit by itself is enough for that corner.

The room is beautiful, and as Ann said, the new rug will add a lot of warmth and dimension. The new window treatments are also perfect! Sometimes it pays to do things slowly, so you can figure out what you like and what's not quite what you want! Great job!

Thank you all! I think I’m going to buy the rug! I appreciate the kind words about my room & window treatments. It was a long time coming but I’m really happy. Funny the comments about the vase with yellow flowers - I completely agree. I threw that there and threw in the yellow flowers in the spring. Really forgot it was there.

Ok - i just realized the rug sale ends tonight so I need to buy ASAP. Do I get same size of current rug or a bit bigger. Current rug is 8x10. new rug options are 7’10” x 10’3” or 9’3” x 12’6”. That would put the rug about as wide as to include full width of both end tables. Is that too big? Help!

It looks like either size would work, unless the bigger one is too wide. I don't think you'd want it to go all the way from the fireplace to the opposite wall, but as long as you'd still have a wood border on each of those sides, you'd be okay. Lengthwise, you'll obviously be fine with either.

I would stick with the size you have now. If it were me, I wouldn't want to cover up all of that beautiful wood floor.

Hi all - my new rug arrived and I love it! What does everyone think? With the change in the rug do I need to change any of the other decor? I’m thinking of adding navy pillows to the sofa. Will they work with the gold pillows or change them out altogether? Thoughts? What does everyone think of the artwork over sofa and rug - do they complement each other? I love the artwork and am not looking to change it. Love to hear thoughts.

I think you did a great job! I would add the navy pillows. If you don't like the present pillows with the navy then remove them, but I think it will work. Nice rug choice.

Also like the art...same colors in rug. Only thing I would suggest getting rid of one vase on end table, let your beautiful Monstera plant be the star of that end. Might do a shorter vase on other end table. I like your book choice (Michelle Obama), great book!

Nice job! I like the darker pillows better and I think I would scoot the black chairs closer to the coffee table. Maybe try one at each end or the coffee table.

Hi all - so the new navy pillows arrived and they are really large. Do you think they are too big on my sofa? Do they work with the gold pillows? I think the blue looks nice with the rug and artwork but am just not sure of the size. Any advice would be welcome as these pillows were pretty expensive!

I like them too. I think the size is fine and that allows you to put the smaller gold ones in front.

Your living room looks really nice but I feel the pillows make your sofa look stiff and uncomfortable. Every single one would have to be removed for people to sit there. I would see how it looks with pillows removed and just a cozy throw over one arm of the sofa for color.

Pretty pillows but may be just a bit large. Try giving them the karate chop, then look again. I think gold pillows would look better on the inside and chop them too. Everything looks kinda stiff. I believe an afghan placed down the center may soften things up too.

Please turn the seam of your lamp shade to the back...lol, that always bugs me and when I go in someone's home I do it for them.

Truthfully the pillows are pretty comfortable and since it is a straight back sofa I don’t think people would need to remove them to sit on the couch. Ive had pillows on the sofa the whole time - just not ones this large.
