In this kitchen, the distance from the front of this island to the dishwasher was approximately 37 1/2" which was tight but do-able. The distance from the back edge of the overhang to the wall behind was also 40". (The 40" was needed for the main traffic pattern from room to room.) The distance from the left side to the cooktop cabinetry was 42".

If you are planning an island, here is a good rule of thumb. If there are usually two cooks in the kitchen, keep 42" between surfaces. If you need to squeeze the space, going below 36" between surfaces is not recommended.

In all cases where you have seating at an island, be sure you take into account the placement of a seated person (not just the stool or chair) - typically 18-20" BEYOND the edge of an overhang - and the space need to walk behind that seated person.
