I would do the stairs and hallway the same and the bedrooms can be different

I've been looking into this dilemma myself and have spoken to a designer, a few carpet installers and have toured several new home developments in the area to see what they have done. The general rule of thumb I have observed is to try and make transitions between rooms as seamless as possible. The new homes I toured all had cut and loop pattern carpet on the stairs and hall, and then short plush carpet in the bedrooms. The key was that the carpets were all very close in height and color. It made the transition almost unnoticeable.

If you have cut and loop carpet on your stairs, one thing to consider is the transition at the top of the stairs. Would it be from carpet to carpet, or is there a nosing or other transition piece to separate the two carpets?

I would do the stairs and hallway the same and then the bedrooms. All same color tones, same style, same pile height.

It won't be as noticeable if they are close. I wouldn't make the stairs different than the attached hallway.

Consider installing a wood flooring on your landing and hall and pick a better quality stair carpet. i would inquire/research more on using Berber on stairs....seems like will wear quicker, unless wool?
