Does the 41" include the hearth? If not what is depth of just the FP wall?

Including hearth- the fireplace without having the hearth is 25 3/4 inch.

I would suggest black consoles. Since your mirrors are alike, then get consoles that are different. Go for the same height. Get different lamps also. Are you looking for storage chests or just a table console?

I think you need something in the espresso/wenge range to give you enough contrast. And because your seating and fireplace are so blocky, I'd look for something with legs.

I thought that something more chest like because they are deeper than most of the consoles. The area just seems so deep.

If I were smarter 30 years ago I would have made them put built in shelving on each side-oh well!

I agree with the chests. Most consoles are 12-16" so a chest would fill the space better.

I would get matching consoles and dress them differently. Resist the urge to fill them with too much crap.

You can still have built-ins made, since you're smarter now!

I disagree that you need a bigger clock, but you could use a few larger frames on the mantel.

I just bought this clock so it will probably stay.

Love what your doing. have you thought about a fireplace guard/screen that IS the artwork or incorporating the clock into a screen?

I agree with what some have said about black cabinets looking nice. I also think cream cabinets would look great and offer a tone-on-tone feel with the mirrors above, and pull out some of the lighter ivory/cream tones in the fireplace brick. You could also arrange some of the smaller photo frames on the cabinets beside and leave the mantle open for a larger piece of art that is more proportionate. Good luck!

Nice work. Glad you moved the lamps. One more picky thing: move everything on the mantel closer to the center. It's OK to overlap the frames a bit. Try to get everything to fit in the space between the corbels. It will give a bit of separation and help to define the fireplace.

I think your one tall frame is enough. You might try an asymmetrical arrangement for a little more interest. Let me play with it a bit and see what I can do.

I ditched the candle on the right, elevated the one on the left and set it behind the photo, moved the "FAMILY" sign off center. It's OK to overlap things on the mantel; it helps to connect them. Play around with it; if you have some taller objects, try them, too. Instead of symmetry (which can be static and boring), aim for balance so that left and right sides of the mantel have the same visual weight.

Much better. Varying the heights, even a little, makes such a difference. Also that candle is brighter and stands out more against the brick. Maybe you could frame one of the photos on the right in white (or just paint the frame) for a little extra jolt.
