I like your Morroccan tiles very well, and they seem to go with your stovetop, cabinets, etc., but that particular subway tile seems to stark with the rest of the combo. Is there a chance you could find a different white? And/or run a strip of the mosaic between subway tiles in either direction (parallel to the counter, but much smaller section?)

HI -- I would not mix ... more up to date with the Moroccan tiles for the whole backsplash -- it will be stunning . Then accent with some big glossy white lidded jars . Make sure you install some LED under cabinet "task" lighting .

Go with glass subway tiles in gray. You'll get the shapes you want, and the color will match better.

I really don't want to do a gray backsplash. I don't like gray. I do know it would match better though

Also... My first idea was to do shiplap as a backsplash and around the Morroccan tile. Anyone seen or heard of that??

Although, I love those tiles, they may be too big a scale for such a small area. Are they really floor tiles? You will need to be very specific with your tile guy and get a detailed plan before starting. There will be lots of cuts and details. You will need a transition piece between those and the subway tile.
Have you thought of a mosaic Calcutta marble for behind the cooktop?

I love the tiles and I think the whole backsplash with them would be great.

They might be floor tiles, but I think a bigger bolder pattern in a smaller space would look better, but too busy to do everywhere ( it would have to wrap around the sink area also off to the right if I did whole thing) . I do have a black or gray trim/transition piece I have picked out. You can see it in picture if you zoom in :)

I understand that you don't care for gray; I don't either. But a very light gray subway would be stunning. Actually, next to your expensive-looking patterned tiles, I fear that white subway would look cheap, like you didn't want to splurge on the fancy tiles for the whole kitchen.

Why not go to the same cement tile place and ask for a monochrome tile in the same gray color you have in your pattern? They will 100% have it.

I think it will look fine if you separate the two with the black pencil tile. The gray pencil tile does not make a sting enough statement.

I am so glad I found this thread. I was having the exact same dilemma as you...Moroccan tile w/shiplap vs Moroccan tile w/subway tile. Yours looks OUTSTANDING! Can I ask about the maintenance of the shiplap? How is it holding up as a backsplash?

Hi jrose! Thank you so much! I was so nervous to do this but pleased with how it turned out. So far it's holding up well. We sealed it where the wood meets the countertop then got a really good waterproof paint. So hopefully it will continue to hold up!

Very nice and unique. It is funny how people are stuck with having to have a tile backsplash. Has anybody actually gotten their backsplash dirty besides behind the stove???

I think it looks great and am so glad you posted this because I am thinking of doing something similar. I have a ton of white subway tile but I wanted to do something more interesting over the cooktop. I'm thinking of Moroccan or Mexican tiles.
