Lift it from a corner, if it is very heavy it is probably a good one. Check with 3 upholsterers. They can also change the style of the sofa if wanted. I would for sure remove the skirt. Have them soften up the seat cushions with some down too. Add updated feet with small wheels under them perhaps. Be sure to go with a durable plain fabric for longevity.

Is it worth $500+ labor and the cost of 18 yards of fabric? Don't think so. Plus the seat cushions are FLAT so that means the foam, feathers or poly needs to be replaced more $$$.

Great idea! It will look amazing in any fabric. Does the current fabric match the room? Might be able to update the sofa without reupholstering. Can you post a pic of the rooms?

Some other things to consider when purchasing used soft furnishings are undesirable smells such as pet stains or smoking. Sometimes these smells are not noticeable until you get the piece home. If the piece is still desirable it may be a good buy over purchasing something from a chain store because older sofas can be better quality than newer ones these days. An upholsterer will be able to advise you on the quality and if he feels it worth investing in.

HI -- It looks like it would be worth it . The cost will depend on what fabric you choose . But when it's done it will be a custom better made than a new sofa. Not to worry about smells and cushions because that would be all new . Your cost could be $2000. and up but worth it .

So spend $2000+ to reupholster a sofa that likely only sold for $599 to begin with??? Not sure that's a reasonable course of action.

Thanks for all the feedback! It weighs a ton, and made by a company called John J Madden in Indianapolis. I was just thinking the quality may be better than new sofa at reasonable price point. The sofa I have now is from West Elm and I paid $700 for that (used) and the cushions lose their shape after an hour of sitting on them. Waste of money relative to my previous custom made sofa I had for 18 yrs. Worse case scenario I just sell it for more than I paid.

I may try to fix cushions on my existing sofa to retain shape rather than reupholster the one I bought. We'll see what quotes are. There is no way I would spend more than $1000 on it. I will post a before and after if I go ahead with it.

today, I just purchased a blue sofa exactly like yours for 300.00. it had been a grandmas, under plastic most of its life. it is in excellent condition, other than baby blue! i worked for a high end furniture retailer for many years where sofas range from 1800.00 on up.

Definitely modern construction comes no where close to vintage qualitity.
