I sprayed black chalk paint (matte), but if you sanded and primed properly, as a DIYer you can use a high quality eggshell paint from a local Benjamin Moore or Sherwin Williams store. Once that cures, I glazed with a raw umber and went over with another glaze of Modern Masters Flash Copper (a little more red than I'd like, but . . to each his own. You can also get a Flash Gold to try on a sample). I used a mix of a gallon of a high gloss top coat and a satin finish top coat, so it's not too too much and not too too dull.
