Look for a local artist to paint you something. Go to some local art shows, etc.

You don't buy "art" to fill wall space! And to 'like' art on Etsy is no different from liking art from Des Moines. There is good and bad everywhere.

Go to art shows, look around your area, see what real artists are doing. It's your home, not the waiting room at Pep Boys.

We have a blank canvas (just a couch and a rug) as we've just moved in and are decorating now. Buying the rest of our furniture this month. Going to do a comfortable casual look. We checked out the local galleries and the pieces we liked were $7000 and up which unfortunately is not doable for us at this time. Which is why I thought u I'd ask here. Attached is a photo of the wall.

Do you think a collection of smaller pieces would work? I was leaning toward a large bold piece with lots of colors.

You don't have to fill the space all at once. Just start buying pieces one or maybe two at a time and take your time. Also, it does not need to match, what matters is how you and yours feel about it. This is my way of agreeing with tatts that you don't buy art just to fill wall space.

Go to a local university student showcase. Students would be happy to sell their artwork in the hundreds.

Not sure why you're posting each question in a separate dilemma. The art and the chairs (and everything else in the room) should all be considered at the same time.

If you look around at art schools, local art shows, workshops, you can find someone to make you an affordable piece.

For the room, first thing is pull the sofa away from the wall a couple of feet. You have the space, and pushing it against the wall says "waiting room".

I was thinking a colorful abstract piece might be nice to add some color.

There are several art galleries here but way out of my budget.

SCAD is a couple hours away, maybe I'll have to look into if the students have any art sales in the summer maybe.

Instead of looking at just paintings, prints and pictures, do consider posters, pressed metal wire wall art and/or fabric as art as well.

Before investing heavily in art, first decide on some basic theme or color scheme so you don't end up with a room that looks like a thrift store or yard sale.

Unless you're wanting original work of a known artist, consider paying a visit to your nearest Habitat for Humanity Restore Store. When the furnishings from and estate are donated there are entire living rooms, including art, available at an affordable price.

I had a photo I took while on vacation blown up to three feet long for only $35 dollars. Then you can take it to a frame shop and have it mounted on lightweight foam board for almost nothing.

Here is a room similar to yours. Space feels better with the sofa pulled away from the wall.

I was thinking that hanging a few squares of copper sheeting up would be interesting. Don't know at all the cost for copper!

Are you interested in trying something yourself? You could purchase a lightweight sheet of plywood and use some metallic paints.

Rugs can be hung on a wall. For example, this one is 5 feet wide which looks about the right size for over your sofa. Your art should be 2/3 to 3/4 the size of what it hangs above. The first one reminds me of a butterfly's wings.

Although your wall is huge, I would stick to the size of your couch, and figure out what to do with the rest of the wall.

OR

If you end up moving your couch to a different angle (like facing the outdoor area to the right), then you can put a very large artwork on that wall. It all depends on where everything ends up.

Hi, how about 3 pieces of art long and narrow behind the sofa and you'll go from there. They could be framed prints or paintings on canvas. You then would have a better vision on how to finish the rest of the room.....chairs, accessories, etc. You can also visit ebay. It's a great site

Terracegallery -Didn't think that anyone was questioning child sweatshops. KShoa is very visible on Houzz, and this is the first time I've seen such a statement.

A lot of great sites listed above as sources for great prints at affordable prices. If you want to try a unique way of finding art, check out artbyhue.com. There you find art from a number of the suppliers already listed, but you can search by a specific color you want to feature.

Many of the suppliers re 'print on demand' which means they can make each piece in a variety of sizes, up to very large for a decent price.

@shirlpp I think terracegallery's comment is due to the fact that the art market is flooded with Chinese products in big box stores (z gallery, Home Goods, etc), and as an artist, she can see how difficult it is to compete against that as a solo artist in the US. No offense taken either way.
