Shower only. No tub. All you need is a hall bath with a tub.

Remodel for yourself, but having a tub in the master bath is still a good idea. Whirlpool tubs sound nice, but really how many times are you going to sit there and fill the tub all the way up to turn on the jets?
I would get a longer or bigger tub with the shower in it as well, or skip a tub altogether and do a very large shower with two heads and a nice bench to sit on, under the water.

The trouble is that most of the pretty soaker tubs are not designed for tub shower use. You need an alcove tub with an integral tile flange if you need it to pull dual duty. More people would rather shower than use a tub, so designing the bath fro that gets the maximum return on utility for the expenditure.

Agree with maria regarding jacuzzi type tubs. A soaker tub takes less water to fill, stay hot longer (don't forget to insulate whatever you get), takes up less space and is easier to clean.

Totally agree with mariadgs. If I was house hunting, a jetted tub would be a big negative. But a soaker tub would be great as long as the water heater is big enough to actually fill the tub with hot water.

Alternative to jacuzzi and soaker is bubble jet, check out what Bain Ultra has to offer (they invented the technology) but Kohler and others make bubble jet also. Bubble jet tubs don't offer the concentrated force of jacuzzi jets, but they also don't attract mold nor have the cleaning issues. Sophie is right you will need to find a tub that can successfully double as shower; best if you visit a plumbing supply store and discuss options with professionals. Good luck!

thanks everybody for your input, I've got over the jacuzzi tub idea, just too small a bath, so.... I'm putting in a 'real' jacuzzi in the back yard. still struggling with tub vs no tub, although I would think it should be easy now with the backyard jacuzzi. I'm going to get input from 2 local realtors and an interior designer. there's at least one interesting curved apron tub with matching curved sliding doors, see pic. it has an appealing utility, however an open shower only with floor to ceiling tile and floor to ceiling glass is really awesome, see sample pic. my size is limited to 32x60, so maybe a small seat in the center, not a full bench like the pic, I would think aiming both shower heads while sitting on a seat competes with a tub soak, :-) my thinking is the openess of the shower only with the extra room for not having the tub walls will add a dimension to the other wise small bath size, whew

When we redid our bath, we chose the Kohler Archer tub, to use up about the same footprint we had, but narrower width. We then created the larger shower. The result was great.
