Honestly, the form of that tree looks pretty bad, from what I can tell. Any chance of getting a whole-tree picture, so we can see the overall structure of the tree and get a better feel for how much of the tree we are looking at?

Agree with Brandon....that is kind of a cull plant. If you want to live with a multi-stemmed tree, be aware that such multi-leader trees are prone to split out in storms, etc. Where the main "leaders" diverge from each other, there is a V-shaped crotch and this is where the plant will split apart at some point. Yours has two such V-crotches visible in the photo.

I'd look up subordination pruning, a technique to deal with such structural problems. A good place to look is the U-Florida website, under Ed Gilman, one of the chief developers and proponents of this strategy. In subordination pruning, one gets a branch ready to be removed by shortening it up, thereby making it behave as a branch instead of a competing main leader. This is the problem your tree has-multiple leaders all trying to be the main one. If you study the subordination techniques, then come back here and ask for more advice, i think we can salvage this plant. And don't worry about timing. You've got lots of time to get this right.
