Is the TV required to stay in that location? And, while the red is way too much for me personally, that place definitely has a personality!

I would try keeping the colours together. For instance, put your sofa across from the tv with a sofa table behind it and bring the red chair into this side of the room. Then group your white and blue chairs at the fireplace end. You have a lot of colours and different shapes of furniture.

I would get another area rug by the TV area and group colors together. Love the bold red!

Would you consider eliminating some of the bookcases, the console in the TV corner, and lots of the tchotkies? Your fun and sleek seating pieces are surrounded by a lot of clutter which distracts the eye and detracts from them. Start by flanking the triple window with the two bookcases that now flank the fireplace. Can the slim bookcase and the shorter one go in another room? Replace the huge clock, with the piece of art above the mantel.I don't like faux clocks. Looks like you're timing your guests' stay. If you love it, hang the clock on the floor mirror wall, and move the rocker there with the square floor lamp that is in the TV corner. Turn your rug and red sofa to face the FP. Arrange the two blue chairs flanking the sofa and facing each other over a contemporary round coffee table. Take down the balls on the curtain rod. They're much too busy with your busy patterned curtains. You don't need to have everything on display at once. Are there books you could pass on to someone else? Packing up your decor into boxes marked "warm" and "cool" allows you to cut them in half and redecorate twice a year when weather changes. The bookcases are looking like storage, so once they're emptied out, style them with 1/3 books (lying, leaning, standing, propping or holding up something else,) 1/3 large decor items that can be identified from across the room (for the appropriate season,) and 1/3 open space. Photos on the shelves should be limited to 3 per bookcase, layered with a large one behind two smaller ones, and placed on different height shelves within the bookcase. I think the two contemporary chairs are fine to back up to the sofa, but they need a larger table with them. Paint the TV credenza in the same blue as the two chairs at the opposite end of the room since that blue seems to be sprinkled around as your accent color. You might find a chalk paint in that color and could give it a satin finish. Valspar has a color called Sunday Bustle in their Chalky Finish Paint line that should be close. Their clear sealing wax will give you the satin finish.

Love your color combinations, but agree that the arrangement of chairs is not quite right. Lila is correct that the variety of color and chair shape needs to be taken into account. You need some symmetry, somewhere. And the room has too many things in it - the eye is drawn everywhere at once and doesn't rest long enough in any one place.

First, think about your room's function. The way you have your room arranged now, 4 people can sit by the fireplace. 2 people can watch TV, and the 3rd chair, beside the TV, has little value. Decide how many people you need in each area, and we'll have better suggestions. I agree that the red chair should be in the same grouping as the red sofa.

Your long narrow room is being made even longer and narrower, because of the bookshelf and floor mirror, on the wall facing the window. If you were to draw out your floor plan you would see clearly that your traffic path has to swerve towards the TV chairs. I would remove everything from that wall and allow the traffic path to go straight along the wall. You will have much more flexibility in furniture arrangement options if you do this. You especially need it because some of your chairs are large.

Once you have decided on your chair placement, next step is to reduce the amount of other furniture. There is a bit too much right now and it's taking away from the balance of the room. But seating first.

Decoenthusiaste and I were typing at the same time! I agree with her thoughts but you may get overwhelmed by all the suggestions. My recommendation is to deal with the functional issues, seating and traffic path, first. Next steps are as outlined by Decoenthusiaste.

One suggestion would be the sofa facing the fireplace, and the red chair where the tallest bookcase is now. The round-armed white chair facing the red chair.

In the TV area, the 2 blue chairs facing the TV, and the large white chair where the footstool is.

Or reverse this suggested arrangement if the sofa is more comfortable for TV viewing.

I really like all of your furnishings, especially the red! The things that I find distracting are the big, white blinds and the patterned curtains. Do you need to have blinds?

I was thinking of a major change. Locate the TV over the fireplace, surround that end with the big red & white furniture and then make a seating area in the dining room that would be more cozy. The final piece would be to locate the dining room over where you currently have the tv. You may be able to move the couch back a bit to make that space feel larger, while giving the dining area a window. Same relationships, just making a focal point near the tv/fire combo. But, this is just a planning suggestion. How you use the spaces may negate this whole thing. Just wanted to create on focal point instead of multiple competing spaces that were all equal. Good suggestions above as well. Good luck!

I just guessed at dimensions, but this might work for you

I would put sofa facing FP with table behind it. Move the red chair into grouping with blue chairs by FP and keep just the white chairs in front of TV. Add an area rug to TV area. Remove one bookcase that is by the windows to another room. I can't really see what is on wall opposite windows, but a large cabinet.

I would put the tv either over the fireplace or to the side. I would then take the bookcases and two chairs and move them on the opposite wall facing the fireplace as a reading area.

Once you get your furniture in place, then tackle the décor. Take everything down on top of bookcases. Arrange shelves per deco's suggestions. Re-do mantel without all the small items. Hope this helps.

I really think you need to de-clutter first to see how you can make the best of your space. You have some nice furniture. Wow, you have a lot of books! I would start by narrowing down your collection if possible, then choosing ones that are special enough to display and ones that can be put away. (Do the same with the knick-nacks.) Then I would use just one bookshelf OR two MATCHING bookshelves to display them. All the mismatched bookshelves make the place not look planned out and the ones on either side of the fireplace must match or it will just look off no matter what. They look similar but seem to have different backing. The other main thing about the room that bugs me are the curtains. They are not working at all IMO and solid panels would be so much better there. I agree with the person that suggested you put the red pieces on one side of the room. Define the two sitting areas with two different but complimentary rugs. Make sure the rugs fit under your furniture and are not too small. The nightstand or console or whatever that furniture is in the corner by the tv is totally out of place in that location. These are just some of the things that jumped out to me about the room, I hope some of it may help you design you room in a way that makes you happy.

You can really see in Susan's picture how the cabinet squishes your traffic path. But we're all just in the dark about furniture arrangements until you tell us how many seats you need in each area. Or even if one of the chairs can be removed.

My thoughts would be that there are too many individual chairs & too many clashing colours wanting to be noticed, at the moment... So it looks like an explosion of colours and texture. hence room appears disconnected! Albeit the arrangement looks fine to me....

BUT - there is always a but :) :) :)

It is your style and own individualism. Perhaps even a SCREEN to create some separation of the areas (TV and cosy fireplace) could settle the entire room.

From looking at the photos, my eyes are just so excited trying to see everything all at once :) :) which is great because it is interesting!

TRY TO find focal points.

Your room would look entirely different if you would get rid of the bookshelves flanking the fireplace. That whole area is so busy it ruins your MCM vibe.

Turn the sofa to face the FP, which will better define two spaces. Put a blue chair on each side angled in like this...

Yikes, just saw another shelf by the window. Take it away. Move the brown chest--that's squished in the corner below the picture and next to the white ottoman--in its place. Center the white ottoman under the picture.

I would move the rug to the other grouping and get something solid for in front of the red sofa. The thing about red is a little goes a long way. quieting down the sofa with a neutral will help.

Maybe we should give it a rest, Houzzers, and see what the OP thinks - we've thrown a lot out there!

Your space has much potential with its colorful furniture and beautiful hardwoods. It's so refreshing to see something that isn't gray. You've had some good suggestions regarding furniture placement and editing of accessories and extra pieces of furniture. You will be happy with the changes you can make and it won't cost anything but your time and energy.

Haven't read the comments above. I'd start by layout. Group a set of 4 club chairs around fireplace. You already have 2 blue so maybe try the 2 white ones with them though I'm not sure about the rocker chair. Put the sofa and red chair facing the TV. Snap a pic and post.

I agree with the sentiments above. You've got a cool vibe there. Your furniture will shine when you streamline. The first thing that hit me is that you could use end tables and reading lamps. No lamps on top of bookcases, IMHO.

I think you need a rug in the tv area to define the space.

From RugKnots most recent post, I might try placing the red chair beside the tv stand and the white one beside the other white one. I love your colors, but placing the two white by each other and the strong color by itself might keep my eyes from visually jumping from one color to another in the room. This might give a calmer look.

Please don't place the TV over the fireplace if you can help it. It is not a good viewing angle if you watch tv.

So, I tried a number of furniture arrangements, with the paring down and moving heavy bookcases and other bigger furniture items as next steps. Please bare with me as theses are quicker furniture moves. And I don't have additional rugs or tables, etc.

Version 1: white chairs by TV area, sofa and blue chairs by fireplace ala @leelee's suggestions

Version 2: red and blue by fireplace and white only by TV ala @Susan2494 recommendation/ Floorplan

I think you're definitely on the right track!

Version 3: clustering colors together as many of you recommended

And switching the chairs by fireplace

And, I admit that I'm exhausted after all these furniture moves :) so, please make your recommendation on furniture layout and or additional changes and I'll tackle bookcases and books next! Thank you all for your suggestions!

If I have to choose, I do like my arrangement best (of course) and my 2nd choice is moving the red sofa and chair to TV area. But I am thinking that you like the 2 white chairs for watching TV. You are such a good sport for moving all that furniture. Make your furniture decision and then tackle the de-cluttering. The end result should amaze you.

BTW, my second choice with the 4 chairs is 2 blue on each side of FP and white ones with back to sofa. I really like the red and blue pieces together, it looks like a cozy conversational area in front of FP. You are going to see favorites for all the arrangements, so pick the one you like, All of them will work.

I would buy two matching simply-patterned area rugs to both accentuate AND unite the two seating areas. Put the front legs of each seating piece on the rug in each half of the room, leaving a border of wood flooring all around each rug.

I don't care for the 2 white chairs together, although maybe it looks better in real life. I would put the red items together with one white chair, and the 2 blue chairs together with the other white chair.

Moving the seating is pretty futile without taking care of the casegoods overload issue.

I have to disagree deco, the first priority is the seating arrangement. Once that is in place she can then see what accessories fits in that plan and move those as needed. I think she realizes that the overload issue will need to be done no matter how she arranges her major seating pieces.

Heather, are the 2 white chairs the same fabric? Does the little footstool match one of them?

I think there are to many chairs as well as way to much shelving. As I see on Houzz often, every spot does not need to be filled. This room can't breath and people can't walk. Love the red but not with the white or blue. Maybe two chairs with matching pattern that includes red, blue and white colors in the pattern. Turn them facing the fireplace at an angle in place of the two white and two blue chairs. Maybe the blue and white chairs can move to another room or sold to pay for the new chairs.

I love that your room is very expressive of what you love. I also have red couches and smile whenever I see them. You are so brave to post on here as so many have adamant opinions. I love reading houzz and looking at the rooms, but I loathe the scrutiny with little or no room for personal expression in design... Be of good courage, my friend!

Exactly, susan2494! "the casegoods issue will need to be done no matter how she arranges her major seating pieces." Once the casegoods are in place the seating has much more room to be flexible - the arrangement will fall out on its own for the most part, if she can get the overload of casegoods out of the way of the seating! This is like stirring a pot into which you've dropped a spoon - it won't sort out without removing the spoon!

Luv, luv, luv the color! Trouble is there is no cohesiveness and there is just way too much stuff. If dealing with casegoods is the next thing on the agenda, I would take all of it out of the room and only put back what makes sense for what goes on in the room. Instead of an overload of odd sized bookcases, I would get an entertainment center for TV with shelves for some books and decor items. Say goodbye to those on F/P end of room. Here is my favorite red room. It takes wow to the next level!

Amen, ashtonchic! Got to get to those bigger, dark, hulking pieces and place them just right! Then the fun can begin seriously! Take a break over the weekend, or enlist the muscle to help. Moving the seating IS more fun, but you've got to "eat your peas first," no matter how distasteful!
