need help with flooring for beach house

hi, we are building a beach house that will be right on the water so a lot of salt spray exposure etc. We would like floor boards in the main living areas etc but are worried about their longevity with being exposed to water and humidity. We are confused about which type of floor boards as there are so many on the market. Should we go with tiles instead? Thanks

I would do vinyl plank it stands up well to water and sand i have had mine for almost 9 yrs.

A wood floor in that kind of environment sounds like a recipe for problems. The salt spray will keep you busy enough cleaning the windows so I wouldn't want a flooring that is an issue. There are tons of great looking floor tiles to consider.

A wood floor would be fine I suggest a laminated hard wood if your worried about humidity

i like tile at our beach house, it feels cool and dry under foot in the most humid weather, anything else feels sort of gross.

There are exotic wood species (like Ipe, Jatoba, etc) that are OK with humid areas...but those are very special woods, with very special requirements and very strong colouring....you have to LOVE the colours to live with them.

Vinyl or tiled floors would be your best bet. In a hot/warm climate the tile is the go-to floor. In cooler climates (like N.E. USA) the vinyl is a product that works best (feels a bit warmer in the winter time).

Vinyl works great in a beach-house environment. It is virtually waterproof, and can take quite a beating. However, make sure the wear-layer is substantial. Sand wears through the wear-layer very fast, so a thick wear-layer will ensure the floor lasts for a long time. 20 mil should be your bare minimum.

I would go with either a tile that looks like plank hardwood or a vinyl tile in a more beachy rustic finish. Good luck!
