That's fun, isn't it. Our Annas stay year round but I had my first Rufous of the season this morning. I thought I had seen one last night just as it was getting dark but wasn't sure...this morning it was clearly a rufous at the feeder off my kitchen. I hope one will start feeding at the feeder outside my office so I can enjoy it from my desk...

Mine is a ruby throated one.

It could also be a preference for that feeder (design) or if they are several feet apart, it could be that the hummer has decided to protect that particular feeder.

Yes, it could be a preference to a certain feeder and they are only about a foot apart from each other. I now have a 3rd feeder up about 3 feet away from the others and have seen 2 hummers so far. Can't wait for more to arrive!

I saw our first hummingbird this morning. It's cold, rainy, and I'm glad I had my feeder out. It's a broad-tailed male.

I am in central Florida, East coast, and the ones that frequent my yard (Ruby Throats) over the Winter all left with in the last 2 weeks to spend their Summer elsewhere. September is when they start showing up here again.

I had one buzz me the other day. It was near the location of an old Golden dew drop plant I have. It hasn't flowered yet. I'm wondering if it is one that was here last year.

I got so excited when that hummingbird showed up and used the feeder, but it didn't stay. It must be migrating even farther north. I'm still waiting for my hummingbirds to return.

Now I have one or two that seem to have marked my yard as their territory. It's nice to have these little birds back.

cassie, there are articles that have been posted here showing that hummers do prefer a stronger than 4:1 solution when it is offered. Some authors recommend the stronger solutions as the hummers do not have to return as often for it, and can spend their time hunting for high-protein insects. Also helpful to them while nesting.

You can probably find the articles by searching the forum and/or google.

I use a 3:1 routinely and a 2:1 during migration and nesting.
