Agreed - I shop at HomeSense all the time - what I do, is I attack each room one at a time, then, take my measurements of that surface I want to cover with me to the store.
Once I'm at the store - then I start collecting items and place them together on a surface, in the store. If I like how they all look together then I bring them home and try them there.

My biggest rule of thumb is less is more - bigger is better.

Find one big thing that is a must have, and the add larger items to compliment - not a bunch of tiny knick knacks that look cluttery.

For you Lisa,
1) Find your inspiration dream room photo - that will indicate your style and end result
2) Find a pattern, or fabric, or piece of art that has all the colours you want in your room, then always pick accessories that compliment that one inspiration point.
