Just seems to me that everything you have selected so far is medium tone in color. The area could use a bit more color and contrast. I am of the opinion that nothing is required on a mantle except at Christmas.

What you need is some color dark wood candle holders would be the last choice I would choose bright white planters for the topiary and painting that is much brighter with some color in fact i would paint the fireplace it looks like a black hole especially with the white woodwork.

Change the little planters for vases so you can add some asymmetrical branches to add interest and not be so formal. Go out and cut some real branches--don't buy sticks at Pier One.
