Getting Ready for Easter: the Dry Run

Anyone else working on their Easter table? I picked up flowers from the florist today to arrange in my own containers....still need more salal in the trumpet vases and I may cut some ivy at the last minute to trail down the sides. Not 100% happy with the yellow ribbon grass, I think I still prefer paper if there is time to get more. This year I found woven baskets that can do double duty in closets and desks instead of more decorative Easter baskets, one for my mother, DH, and one for DD and DSIL to share.

Questions:

1. Do I need candles on the table? I have silver candlesticks that hold a single candle and crystal ones, and I have pink candles....too much?

2. Move straw bunnies onto table on the outside of the vases or leave on sideboard?

3. Why didn't I buy the eggs-with-chick-legs-stickingout place card holders at Scott's antique market two weeks ago?????

To me the table looks bare. Should I sprinkle jelly beans around the centerpiece and vases?

Very pretty. I like it as is and wouldn't add jelly beans, and don't think you'll miss the place cards, cute as they may be. I personally like to there to be a little open space, so if it were me, I'd stop right there - perfect as is.

Thank you, Blue, you may be right, I tend to overdo things. :-)

Don't you love when you can combine things that aren't necessarily Easter by themselves, but say Easter when the come together? Like your silver, the green-tinted glasses, the dishes (is that Quimper?)

Maybe add soft green napkins to set off the silver forks. By the time you fill the glasses and set butter, condiments--and do you serve family style or at the buffet?--and people, it will be all you could desire.

Just, um, well...sunglasses in the tureen?

Yes, those are pink and white sunglasses with green reflective lenses, I couldn't resist! I will probably take them out before Sunday, although one could argue that sunglasses are a sign of spring, lol. (That is actually a silver footbath, not a tureen, and it is filled with ribbon grass and eggs containing chocolates, coconut caramels and gluten free fruit chews.)

The plates are Vietri. I do have Quimper luncheon sized plates, but these go nicely with the Havilland dinner plates.

The vases are so tall. How does that look when you're seated? I'd move them to the sideboard and bring the rabbits to the table in their place.

I think it's lovely as is. We're used to seeing so much "stuff" on tables that a "normal" table seems "bare". I think it's perfect! And I wouldn't add jelly beans!

The vases are tall so people can talk across the table without a lot of foliage and flowers getting in the way. The vases need more greenery and perhaps a few Helebores.

Martha, I am thinking you may be right!

I do have some soft madras plaid napkins in blue, pink, green, lavender and yellow. I think i may dig them out of storage downstairs. I usually use them for baby showers and girl parties outdoors (we used them a lot by the pool in Florida).

I think the table setting is lovely. I would probably take everything in the silver footbath and spread it along the center of the table, not using the footbath at all.

Fun, I actually had most of the footbath contents on a long silver platter and the vases are just too high for anything else that low between them. I could have stuff around one of the silver vases but it isn't hefty enough for the size and shape of the table. One of those type vases is often used in the center of a round table, sometimes with votives around it. Since I wanted to use both of mine, I needed some mid-rise container for the real estate in between. I may get out a chunky rustic basket to use instead of the footbath.......too much silver?

Looks great! You are waaay ahead of me. I have off of work tomorrow, better get busy! Thanks for the inspiration and happy Easter!

Not too much silver. If you want to keep the footbath, how about adding a runner under the footbath and two vases to pull the three elements together?

The more I look at it, I think you've hit the nail on the head. There's just too much disparity in the height of the vases and the footbath. I think the footbath should move off the table and just use the two vases. It is a sparser look than you would see on a tablesetting blog, but closer to how a traditional setting would look.

The table works for me, Kswl2, but it's out of character for you! It's the white tablecloth that highlights simplicity, and your tablescapes from what I've seen over the past few years are far from simplistic.

I like the idea of draping ivory or a small basket of short tulips that I've seen at my local market. Candles would represent the presence of Christ, but not so much the beginning of spring, depending upon how you look at it.

No to jelly beans... just no.

But none of this compares to spending the day with family so enjoy regardless of your table.

How come the straw bunnies are posing for the camera, showing off their goodies? :-). It's lovely, all of it. I think I need to get on the ball. I haven't even planned our Easter meal yet, let alone decorated.

    nice!

i think a sprinkling of jelly beans like confetti could look really cute- esp with the center piece! (i would get jellybellies tho and hand pick 3 or 4 pastel colors from bulk if you can tho rather getting a bag of big brachs or something in bright colors...

    i would add candles!

Another vote to keep 'as is'. Anything else would be too much and if this is just family, no place cards for sure. If you think jelly beans are needed, put them in a small cup by each place so each person can enjoy them if they would like.

I almost always use place cards because I seat everyone in different places each time :-)(and I really like the holders I have). We don't really eat jelly beans, they would function, as someone mentioned above, like confetti on the table. Still looking for fabric for a runner though!

Personally I think it's just a bit juvenile for a group of adults. Or maybe I am misunderstanding and you will have children there too? I would probably concentrate more on flowers, silver, china etc. than candy type items. I wouldn't use the pink with your red walls.

I also think the vase is too tall. I like to take a bouquet and fill 3 short vases with them, then add 5 votive candles. All low and at the right height for desired effect.

    Too many baskets on table.

Idea- get glass containers and fill with Jelly Bellies, and nestle a votive candle in each.

I love the china and table settings.

This morning on the Today, a woman did a segment on the Easter table-it was a train wreck! A Spring/Easter colors shower curtain for the table cloth and cheap plastic plates and bowls from the Dollar Store.

    Your room looks elegant.

    I assumed grandchildren.

I prefer the low look too. Nothing gets in the way.

    A shower curtain, eek!

Tina, the bunnies are definitely tres juvenile, but they are for my mom who adores rabbits. My 29 year old daughter and her husband will be here as the "children," and they both love candy. I have some pretty specialized candy, it is all very haut (as candy goes). and delicious. They will take most of it home with them in their baskets. Those three Easter baskets on the table corners will be in their recipients' seats on Sunday, they won't be on the table for dinner btw. I should have removed them for the photos :-( I know pink doesn't look great with the red walls, and occasionally I wish they were another color, but I have these china pieces that do like to come out and play occasionally. Next year my Easter table will be more coral and spring green, I think.....

I completely agree the vases are WAY tall, but that allows people to talk with the flowers towering above out of the way. The table is pretty long with one leaf, it would seat ten easily in this configuration, and the longer it is the taller or bushier or wider the centerpieces need to be or they will look utterly lost. When I want candles I often use three silver mint julep cups in a row with low flowers, but with tall silver or crystal candlesticks at each end of the row, I do love that look. I am not that fond of votives and only use them outdoors.

I think I am missing moss! Thank you for your ideas, I have a few new things to try before Sunday.

I know! I kept listening to see if she would mention that this was a "kids' table", but nope, it's for the general gathering.

I would definitely sprinkle jelly beans around the table!

I love table scapes and wish I had the room to seat everyone at the dining room table. I end up having some at the table and some in the living room(one long room) eating at the coffee table or small side tables. I have 4 little ones age 6 and under so they usually end up at the table. I think your table is beautiful and I agree about the napkins and a runner would certainly look nice also. Have a wonderful holiday.

No grandchildren yet, only one child married and she's a 29 year old newlywed. It will be awhile before I'm going a REAL kid's Easter table, but what fun that will be!

Happy Easter everyone, I think the ideas of rebirth and renewal are wonderful spring tidings regardless of religion. Passover is not far away, either, both are solemn yet joyous observances and I would love to see Passover tables here!

Oh I knew you didn't have grandchildren and that your children are grown, but I wasn't sure if there were any guests with children. That is what I meant.

I wish! There's nothing I would like better than a couple of fun kids at the table! Anybody have a couple of spares I can borrow, feed candy to and send home? LOL!

    Lovely! Have a wonderful Easter.

Lisa, your table is tres' chic, but no jelly bellies OR beans. I think that woild downplay the feeling you're wanting. With 3 grands, I decided to do a whimisical table this year, since holidays are usually formal. We're even using paper placemats~I couldn't resist them! I have solid pink dishes, white napkins, but can't find a napkin ring I like. I'm thinking maybe a pink ribbon with white polka dots simply tied in a bow. Probably a few bunnies/flowers for the centerpiece, still undecided. Here's the cute placemat.

Love those placemats, they are adorable! Your GC's will love them!

Pretty table, KSWL! I set my mine this morning. We're having brunch with my mother and stepfather. I was planing to scatter candy robin eggs, but I must have forgotten them when I bought the other Easter candy. I had an extra bag of jellybeans, so I used those. I need to buy a plant for the plant stand, and I haven't decided on glasses/stemware yet.

Patty, where on earth did you find those marvelous placemats...in paper!

porkandham, so pretty and yummy. The tulips really echo the jelly beans and eggs :) What color is that on your walls? It looks so different in each of the two pictures.

Thought my grands would get a big kick out of them since I did! Can't wait to set the table and will try to remember to take pics.I found them at a small furniture/gift(?) type store in a small town in Tx, but you can order them here. Scroll down and you'll see them.

KSWL, your table is so lovely. My Simba and Toby are an accident waiting to happen and there is no way I can have pretties on my table because they would all end up in a crashing heap on the floor within minutes. I will have to wait for morning and then keep them in the downstairs while I get everything ready.

I think your little straw bunny is adorable. Last month I found a treenware rabbit. I have a treenware pig that I fill with gourds for thanksgiving and pinecones at Christmas. I thought the rabbit would look great with colored eggs so I ordered it. I was so disappointed in the quality. My pig was made in the U.S. and the rabbit came from China. The quality is just awful, so bad that I never purchased the alabaster eggs from Williams Sonoma that I had planned on.

Patty, the placemats are darling! I'm sure your grands will be enchanted with them.

Porkandham, Your table is so pretty and festive, I love how you've scattered jelly beans on the table, and the tulips are wonderful!

Porkandham is your sterling Buttercup? That is my main flatware, I love that pattern, it's so pretty. I can't wait until tomorrow morning to get my table set.

bpathome- Thank you! I think it's something like "Jewel of the Nile." I was determined to paint one day right after we moved in 15 years ago, but the Benjamin Moore store wasn't open on Sundays, so it came from either Home Depot or Lowes. I still like it, and it was a snap decision made while standing in front of the paint chips with a swatch of my dining room chair upholstery in a big box store with bad flourescent lighting! The first picture is more accurate.

Holly-Kay - Thank you! Yes, it's Buttercup. It was my grandmother's, and it makes me smile every time I pull it out.

It is just beautiful. It is still my favorite pattern of all time. I have some other sets but there is something so special about Buttercup. I love how it patinas.

Final pics this morning before we head out. I did not have time to get jelly beans, spent all yesterday either working from home or cooking and getting a manipedi. (I told the nail salon that if they sold a few groceries in the side their clients would be well satisfied, lol!)

Table essentially the same configuration, with more flowers in vases (two more green hydrangeas added to each and the tall stuff eliminated......it finally dawned on me that the vases were Tall Enough. Am always trying to establish height in my floral arrangements from years of garden club seminars :-) but in this instance, not needed. I've put the baskets on chairs and have my two-tiered bakery server at the end of the table, it will hold small pastries and rolls and the horseradish-curry mayo and honey mustard butter will be in small serving dishes at that end as well. No ivy in the vases,it didn't look or hang right, so I used it on the sideboard instead. I took off most of what was there (candelabra and crystal decanters) and put vases of flowers with the bunnies, one pink chrome and another green glass, with hydrangeas, hellebores, and a bit of trailing ivy. It looks more garden-y and I think my mother will love it. She has been ill and is going back into the hospital tomorrow, so this dinner is really for her spirits.

Dinner: honey baked ham, potato salad with fresh dill, stuffed tomatoes, asparagus, squash casserole, rolls, and carrot cake for dessert. Tidbits before dinner are pineapple and cantaloupe, and sea salt bagel chips with either homemade BLT dip or "Texas caviar," a concoction made with black eyed peas that I heard about on this very forum.

Kswl, perfect. The sideboard looks so put-together, the greenery and the bunnies just works!

louislinus, more yum lol. (The candle looks like it's been into the wine, though...) And what is YOUR delicious purple on the wall?
