Shoots/suckers or growing tips off the top of the main stem or off a sucker (lateral branch.) That's it. Leaf branches don't work.

Thanks for the info Dave. Is there a way to encourage sucker growth? Maybe reduce light to promote stretching?

My answer to above is : Cut off the growing tip of the main, at a certain stage ( eg when it is 3ft tall). This should encourage more lateral growth.

Actually I am going to try some this season. I can imaging that this will result in bushy indet looking like a det.

The best way to get early suckers is to plant early. Once a plant makes a growth spurt suckers are part of the growth as are blossom clusters. As you snap out suckers more will grow from the same junction. Justification for starting early, suckering heavily and cloning actively.
