Roman shades are a great idea. If privacy isn't an issue try no window coverings at all.

To make that cute dinette stand out more try painting it a different color, black comes to mind. A darker color for the dinette would make it stand out more. You see so much of the floor, because the dinette fades out being white.

the basic reason your treatment isnt working is the rod pocket on the panel is too big for your current slender rod....and your panels are too long. if you decide in the end you want panels that open and close, consider either a grommet top style or clip rings on panels...they easily scoot along the rod and make for a quite small stack back.

Part of why the curtains are overpowering is because they are white. Your table and chairs just disappear.

Another reason they don't work is because they look like laundry hung on a line. Drapes should be sized to the windows they are covering. This means 2-3x as wide as the space and ending above the floor not on it.

Your floor is fine. It looks like an outdoor cobblestone patio and suits your dinette set very well.

Here's what I'd do:

1. remove the curtain from the door. It doesn't fit and doesn't contribute. If you need privacy, add privacy film to the windows. You can get nice translucent stuff with patterns in it if you like. Maybe vines to play up the outdoor cafe mood.
2. for light control, consider inside-mounted blinds in a natural wood or roman shades in a cream and green fabric, perhaps floral. Again, you want something that your table won't disappear against.
3. if you really want curtains, and I don't think they are the best option if you're going for a cafe mood, then something that blends with your green walls could work. Make sure your curtain rod is thick enough so it doesn't sag in the middle.
4. add some colourful accents.

For this space, I would suggest white wood blinds. This would help to control the light, while showing off the molding and trim of the windows that you want to showcase. These would also not compete with your beautiful dinette. They can be made for your door as well, with brackets to secure the blinds at the bottom.

These are all great ideas. I have never heard of privacy film. How awesome! I'm really thinking of doing this on the door and then deciding on Roman shades or blinds for the window. Adding some color to the table somehow will probably help...inspired by the photos above. Super!

I had a thought....do you think something like this would work and put it on the bottom half of the window and then put the window film on the top half foe privacy? Maybe not this color or pattern but just curious. I have cats so looking for something simple and inexpensive that could work for them as well....just came across this and had the thought that it might work but I can't visualize it in my mind.

You could do a half café curtain as you suggested. Found a photo of one on longer windows. Also found a flat ( homemade if you sew) panel on Pinterest that looks to be mounted with a tension rod. You could use the privacy film on the upper windows as you suggested. With your white wire table set and white cabinets , beige floors and gray walls you might want to go the 'burlap' route for half café curtains. It would be modern and fun. If you sew or has a friend who does, they would be simple and fairly inexpensive to make.

I think cafe curtains would be terrific and allow you to add a nice splash of colour and pattern. As far as privacy film is concerned, unless there are 2nd story windows facing your windows, no one will be seeing in so you probably don't need film there. Think of cafes where you've seen these. The people sitting in the windows aren't visible unless you stand right up next to the window. The door film should have some areas of transparency (like the vines that Diane posted) so that you can still see who's outside. Don't worry, it will still be obscure enough to block the view from the street.

Do you happen to know the name of your wall colour? That would let me look up the colour and see if I could find some fabric that looked good. Alternatively, what's your favourite colour? Or do you have an accent colour in your house that is already working with your wall colour?

Okay it's behr 720D-6 Toasted Walnut. I love Robins egg blues and other rustic or antique blues and pale greens. I love the country feel or like the rustic shabby chic look... perhaps eveb french inspired rustic country...idk...I sound all over the map here! But I just want it to flow. If your walls are already brown and if you put up brown curtains you might find it too brown. I liked the fresh green ones you posted better. But if that's too bright for you, I'd see if the etsy seller does trimmed burlap café curtains. A double ribbon of bright colour a handspan from the bottom would give the curtains a bit of zip without being overwhelming.

This is true Jennifer and I keep thinking about what other patterns or colors I could use. Still looking but I think I'm getting closer in my mind to a look that would work thanks to all of the advice and input.

When you add a curtain to a door you really do need it to cover all the windows and use a rod at both the top and the bottom. To "open" the curtain, there is usually a cloth w/Velcro band used to gather the curtain in the middle.

I truly hate the sloppy-drag-the-floor fad for drapes. A tie back for these would minimize that.

I saw these and almost settled for the Robins egg blue ones but I then saw your idea and like yours better! I tried to visualize and I think the green plays better in the kitchen since there's a green undertone in the paint plus it ties in with my olive green sofas which can be seen standing in the kitchen. I think other things like some rooster pictures in the kitchen will also come to life since they have brown and green in them. In my mind it works better on several levels. Also going to do the privacy film as suggested for the door. Can't wait to post everything once it's finished! Thank you so so much for all the suggestions and hand holding!
