I always grew my costus in the shade, but I'm no expert. That is probably Costus Barbatus, sometimes called Spiral Ginger. Beautiful plant! I grew mine under an oak tree and it did very well.

I have a patch of them growing under a massive rubber tree. The tree was very small when they were planted and they bloomed most of the year. Now, they're in total shade and they just grow leaves.

It is Costus spicatus, an old heirloom plant. It was popular decades ago and common in older neighborhoods but hardly ever sold anymore. Its a very easy ginger, grows in part sun or shade but needs moist soil. It gets a cone like inflorescence that is orange, not as showy as Costus barbatus but still nice.

I agree with Eric that it's most likely Costus Spicatus. I grow this plant and have for years. When my leaves look like yours, it's caused by cold. The newer leaves look fine.

If the underside of the leaves are soft and kind of fuzzy, then it could be C. Barbatus.

We call this plant as button ginger plant. Dry leaves indicate lack of watering.This plant does not like water in leaves but on roots.

We also have this in our backyard and I'm also wondering what it is since it also have yellow spots on it but my research says it is an insulin plant?

Why has mine never bloomed? Planted in part sun, part shade and kept watered. Each winter I cut it back to a foot tall; it starts again its flowerless cycle. I was given it by a Garden Web member in Brandon from her bush planted in the sun, at least 10 years ago.

Don’t cut it back. Each stalk produces a terminal inflorescence. Let it grow and it will bloom
