I think one of the easiest and most cost effective changes you could make would be to change out the cabinet hardware and maybe the light over the sink. Also think about what you can put in the open shelving to make it both decorative and useful. You can put stacked everyday plates and glasses, only thing is that in the shelving over the stove they may get greasy (especially since I don't see any vent) and over the fridge they would be hard to reach; so instead maybe use those areas for less often used platters, bowls, etc. that can add interest and color.

Have you just moved in or have you been there a while?

Look in your cabinets for two or three decorative objects to put on the open shelves. Match new kitchen towels and hot pads to their colors. Clear off the counters.

If you need advice on decluttering, just ask. The kitchen will only shine when the counters are kept clear and nothing is on top of the fridge. This Houzz story and many comments show how to make a kitchen shine: https://www.houzz.com/magazine/how-to-stage-your-kitchen-for-a-home-sale-stsetivw-vs~29912722

You can paint the cabinets, and I know someone who painted their Formica countertops and they look good! I'd suggest a light grey for the wood, and maybe slightly darker for the counters. Then, you can change out the knobs for something more modern; if they're too much $, just buy a few at a time! For an inexpensive splash of color, add new dish towels or a small picture or two (Target, Kohls, Walmart good sources). Good Luck!

Yes I am in the process of painting the other rooms and general clean up before moving in. All comments have been helpful.

Depending on budget: change out cabinet hardware; change light fixture over the sink; add a back splash; change faucet.
