I just purchased this area rug from Pottery Barn & I'm trying to figure out what color/ fabric/ pattern in a curtain I should do. My floors are a chocolate hickory hardwood & my walls are a neutral cream. Thx !!!

Sorry, I forgot to answer re the number of panels for the wine room....yes, two panels is perfect as you wouldn't be closing them, right? Even if you were, the window doesn't look very wide.

There are so many beautiful hardware finishes out there these days - and oil rubbed bronze is certainly one of them, and would look good. But, I do think silver could give a nice, modern spin to both rooms. A lot of your furniture leans toward modern, which makes me think more of silver.

What color are the other curtain rods on your main floor?
Oh, I see your kitchen cabinet handles are nickel/silver, so this would be a great way to pick up on the theme?
Where would u do those drink tables ?? And I have a mix of silver as well as oil rubbed bronze throughout. All my interior doors have the oil rubbed bronze handles. The cabinet in the wine room has more of an oil rubbed handle also
  • 9 years ago
Yes, and nothing wrong with mixing finishes either! It's really your choice.....I still lean toward silver, to balance the more rustic and traditional pieces in the wine room and also to play off the dusty blue color of the curtains. Then, I'd do the same in the media room - this time to play up a modern vibe.

The C-trays - when not in use, I'd park the left one at the foot of the chaise, against the wall. The right (I think) could fit along the right wall. The idea is to pull them right up beside you while you're sitting in the sofa. You see how the legs of the C tables will slide right under the sofa?
So the dusty blue curtains only come in "unlined" or "blackout" ...which should I do!
Have you checked into having your window coverings made?It will be a much more custom look. I am not a fan of pre made drapes in your main living space. They are okay for a kids room, something that can be easily changed. I also would wait until you have your furniture chosen. Best to have a plan first. Then when your budget allows purchase items.
If you rush into things, you will end up double spending often.
You bought a rug, but now are designing solely around that one component?
Well that's the thing it's not my living room ...its just a bonus room that goes into my media room and I wanted to make it more of a defined space. I have the luster velvet from west elm in another color and they happen to be great quality. That's why I'm doing them in another color.

Good morning, Nicole! Are the lustre velvet curtains lined? I'm guessing probably not? I'd go with unlined, as the heaviness of the velvet should give a decent drape. I know of another Houzzer who went with the scribble curtains - which aren't as heavy as the velvet,,I'm sure - throughout her LR and they looked amazing - and they were unlined. Lined is definitely necessary for lighter fabrics, but if there is enough heaviness to the fabric and you don't require the blackout for sleeping, then I'm sure you'll be OK with unlined in this case.

I ordered the unlined ... Will post pics as soon as they arrive!! The ones in my living room are unlined and they are thick enough so im sure they will be fine. Still on a mission to look for the ones for my kitchen French doors. I'm still wondering if I should go with a print or not Bc of the bold print the area rug has .. Decisions decisions ughhhh
  • 9 years ago
Which leads me to the next question. Would you do a small little accent table In between the 2 chairs ... Also in the corner behind the left chair could I use a floor lamp!!!????
    Other angle
Good morning, Nicole! You know, what might look kind of nice....if you push the two arm chairs together, leaving maybe 6" between them, and get a set of nesting tables to place on one side of the chairs. When you have guests and need to use both tables, just pull out the smaller one and move it over to the outside of the other chair.

This is a more current look - although, you do still see chairs configured the way you have them now. But, if you don't want to arrange them this way, you could do a round table between them, which will soften the overall arrangement....it's the same principle you used (correctly!) when you decided a round rug would look best in your wine room.

I really like these nesting tables from C&B. I like that the metal throws a different material into the mix, and will create an especially nice contrast with your rustic coffee table.
Definitely, there's room for a floor lamp in the corner - go for it!

And while I'm studying your pics - it looks like the coffee table ornaments could be moved a little closer together for a tighter grouping. You're going to hate me by the time you're done with this thread!
Actually, it looks like the tray could go square with the table - not angled - and the book...just change the angle slightly so it isn't so pronounced. Then push it all a bit closer together.
Not at all. I love all the advice and suggestions .. This is exactly why I came on this discussion board lol so if I push the chairs closer I should put those tables on one side for when we need them ?

Yes, don't put one table on each side when they're not in use. If you have time, maybe push the chairs together and take a couple more pics?

    Here u go ...

Well, that looks pretty good! Yes, I'd add in a pair of nesting tables on one side - probably the right, when looking at the picture - and then your floor lamp could go behind and slightly to the left side? It's just an updated look, is all...the angled chairs with a table between are a more traditional look.

Oops, meant to check the ornaments....looks like the book needs to slide closer to the middle - almost exactly in the middle - and maybe then take another pic, so I can see how the candle then looks in relation to it?

What color are your living room drapes? Just wondering if we should pick up on that color when looking for your kitchen curtains, as I remember your space is open concept?

They are stone .. Do u think I should use them on the French doors
  • 9 years ago
Well, it looks like the color might work but I do t think velvet will give you that light, summery feeling you're after. It's a little hard to tell exactly what your rug colors are - the joys of using a monitor! - but I think I see the color (sweet potato) of this striped curtain in it.....and possibly the color (horseradish) of the solid curtain in there. Also, it looks like the striped ones may be in clearance because they're super cheap!

Either of those colors will relate very nicely to the stone color of your LR curtains, so that's a good connect.
Here are the two curtains with your wall color:

    Looks pretty good!
And here's your rug with the stone curtains:

It would be nice to see a bolder color in your eating area - both to reflect the "lively" activity of eating, and to stand up to the assertive colors of the rug.
I agree . I do like the stripe

Can't hurt to buy them while they're on sale...and make sure you can return them if they won't work!

Good morning .. Haven't been on in a few days ... I should be getting the west elm curtains today :) I was looking at some indoor/ outdoor rugs that may work for the media room. I found 2 from Wayfair. The PB outdoor rugs were close to $1000 and I didn't really want to spend that much (considering I wasn't planning on replacing the one I have in there now bc it's new) what do u think ?? I'm still looking for a few more options
  • 9 years ago
    Another ...

Good morning, Nicole! These are all beautiful! I'd say take your pick....any one of them will work with the PB rug. You could maybe consider sofa pillows, and if you have a few of those picked out it may help you narrow down your choice for the rug? I think, for me, I would go with the suzani pattern rug in the middle. The circles echo the shape of the wine room rug. I also like that it is a bold pattern, to "match" the masculinity of the room. Second choice would probably be the first one - the lattice pattern - as it is similarly bold. The lattice pattern has been quite popular for some time, as has the suzani, and I think both will get several more years mileage before they wind down as a trend. And, if they're inexpensive to begin with, it won't be difficult to replace them when you're ready to update!

I like that one too... Although my fav is the PB dot rug. I just don't know if I have it in me to spend $800 on an outdoor rug :(
  • 9 years ago

Always a tough decision, I know! I really don't know if there would be a difference in quality....I'm Canadian, so I've never ordered from Wayfair. I'd like to think that the savings you get there is because they don't have storefronts, rather than because of lower quality. The only thing I can suggest is that you order both, with a view to returning one. Maybe that way you can compare the quality of the two, which may make your decision easier?

I love that PB dot rug, too.....I'd get it myself, if I had somewhere to put it lol.

Oh great ...lol twist my arm. I'll think about this a day or 2 !!

I'm always happy to play devil's advocate!

Ok so here it is the curtain debut .....

Well, that is just nothing short of gorgeous! You made the perfect choice! I hope you like it?

I do love it... But is it too plain? I was hesitant to go with a pattern bc of the rug but now I'm wondering haha
  • 9 years ago

Try not to second-guess your decisions, Nicole....you said you love it - so that's good enough reason to keep the curtains! Don't forget that in place of pattern, you have texture (sumptuous velvet)....and there's lots of pattern in that rug. You also have those beautiful wine racks, full of texture and character, so perhaps patterned curtains would have stolen a bit of the show from them? There's never just one right way to do things in decorating - so you haven't made a mistake. It's just a different look, is all. And, they do look great!

What about an area rug with bold blues like this ? Or too much ?
On its own, it wouldn't be too much. But, taking into consideration the PB rug nearby, yes, it's probably going to compete with that one. I do like that it's got the red in it that you like....you'll probably find that fitting red into the room will be easier done through your pillow choices.
Heyyyyy I haven't been on in a bit .. Slacking with needing my design advice lol I was looking at these on west elm to go in the kitchen area Bc the print is a smaller scale and it has the mustard/horseradish coloring ??

Those curtains are really pretty, Nicole! I think they would be perfect with your eating area rug!

So I got the curtains from west elm and I love the color !! But I feel like it's missing something ? Do I need more panels to cover the rod? I feel like with the burlap curtains it covered the entire rod Bc of the fringe panel overhang on top. Maybe I need a decorative wood etching over the door ??? Maybe a thicker rod ??? Not sure!!!
Good morning, Nicole! The panels look fine to me, and yes they are a perfect complement to your rug! I'm not sure if this is what you're noticing, but what I noticed is that it looks like the rod could be extended so that the finials pretty much touch the corners. You may be able to do this without moving the brackets....if the rod will extend more, just do that. Then you hang a couple of the grommets on the outside of the bracket to get the curtains going all the way to the wall.

This will give you a cleaner look, as well as visually widen the room. The goal is to hang the curtains so that they aren't covering any of the window.
Ahh that makes sense ...thx !!! And if I were to put something over the door what would u put ?
Now that I look more closely at the curtains, I see they are the back tab type.....so, not sure how easy it will be to have a couple of the tabs on the outside of the bracket? Let me know if it works.

I see what you're saying about the space over the door...OK, well it would be a lot of work but ideally the rod should be hung higher, which means you would need longer curtains. I'm guessing you got an 84" length? So, if you were to exchange for the 96" length and go through the trouble of hanging the rod a foot higher, I think that blank space you're seeing would be eliminated.

Alternately, I'm guessing you are wondering about "word" wall art, like FAMILY, etc.? They're not something you would see in a decorating magazine, nor would you see any of those metal wall art designs - like what you would find in places like Pier One. You could try removing the jug/urn from the top of that cupboard next to the window, to balance out the height discrepancy there.

I'm not Into the "word" wall art .. So I was thinking something like a wood etching ... I guess maybe I should return the curtains for the 96" so I can hang the rod higher. Hope I still have the packaging lol
  • 9 years ago
That's probably your best bet. I did have a look at West Elm dimensional wall art, because if anyone is going to have something a little more "fashion forward" in that department, it would be them lol. I do like their papier-mâché sculptures - the tortoise shell, or the deer head, for example. They also have some beautiful wall art baskets......if it was something very simple, this could maybe work, but you risk getting a cluttered look. Right now, you have that beautiful art beside your table, so we wouldn't want to detract from that. And, definitely, the urn on top of your microwave/oven cabinet would have to go. So, if you can't find you packaging, or otherwise do a return, this would be your next best choice, I think.
I was able to return the curtains at the west elm store bc I found the packaging :) I had to re-order the 96 inch bc they don't carry them in the store
