Shelf above kitchen sink?

I had originally designed the kitchen to have a pendant light above the sink. However, when the contractors installed the exhaust for the stove, they realized that the soffit that will go around it will block the pendant light. I'm trying to decide whether to put short cabinets, a shelf or some other solution that also allows for light above the sink. Any suggestions?

HI -- So it looks like the exhaust has to go out the side wall for some reason .. correct ? So if he is building a soffit to house the vent pipe then a light can be put in the bottom of soffit over the sink area , either a small hanging pendent or an LED pot light . If you want a shelf then have a glass shelf to not block the light or if you use a solid floating shelf then an LED puck light can be put on the underside . Put under cabinet LED lights in for task lighting too .

Given that they have been very competent to date, I'm going to go with yes. I'm very happy with our contractors.

Is your wall where the stove will be an outside wall? If so, the contractor should have just cut an outlet hole for the exhaust there. Then no need for a soffit.

Unfortunately we are in San Francisco where houses are right next to one another, so that wasn't an option.

If a soffit is required, in most cases it is built before the cabinets are installed.

Yes you can mount a recessed light over the sink in the soffit, but there are some bigger issues regarding the soffit and how it will work with your cabinets and layout. You might want to go back to your kitchen designer to resolve these issues.
