Try a color halfway between off white and BM Cork. Do you have a photo of the rug in daylight?

I say no to white. It is the go-to lightener for rooms with dark wood, and that is WRONG. Dark wood is at its best with colors to highlight its beauty. Even off-white looks intuitional next to beautiful woodwork. Some of my favorite rooms have bold wallpaper with dark wood trim.

I would go with the off white. The room looks very dark, and it will look good against the wood trim as long as it is a warm white.

Institutional:

Gold-transforms the room into a bright, rich, inviting space. I just searched for "dark wood trim". 90% are off white, and dreary.

I think it really depends on the look you want and the type of furniture you will be adding. White or cream (with a slight yellow or pinkish tone) can be really lovely; still acknowledging/enhancing the warmth of the wood, but will it suit your rug and furniture style. With a green dining room and pink kitchen, maybe you like more color. Could you take a color from the rug or use your furniture/pillows/art as a stepping stone for your decision. The ceiling looks low and I would keep to a lighter shade. My thoughts are that if you go too dark and especially gold, you may end up with a room that feels more Tudor or very traditional - but it really depends on what your tastes are.

i think that last one greenfish looks a lot like evil has now. is that right evil? I have another evil, it has a wonderful glow. behr rite of spring, i think that glow is important.

Ceiling are 11ft so they are not low. The room is just big. 35'4" X 18'10"

It was gold originally (a lot of the house was gold too). I don't have pillows, well I have one and it is gold. Rug is blue mainly but has gold red and green in it.

I love the gold in the library and I love the green in the kitchen, and the pink in the dining room, but I am afraid it will be too much in such a large room and it will be a massive undertaking to repaint it so I want to get it right the first time. I am thinking best to stay with the warm off white. I can get by with only one coat of paint.

I do like the pictures, but I can't picture the gold in such a large space. Maybe I am nuts. Well I am nuts, but maybe I am wrong about the large space and gold.

Now it is a slightly pinkish off white. My painter matched it for the hall stairs. It is dead on the same.

That was the original lady from when I got the house. It was the only pic I had with the terrible wallpaper (which was two different wallpapers in one room that did not even match).

So you went with off white? If not, last ditch effort to say that color will not be weird in such a large space but rather will ground it and make it cozier, less cavernous, more like a home.

Sorry. To be clear it is off white now but needs to be repainted (plaster issues etc.). Off white are gold are the choices. I may wait until the staining is done to decide fully on paint.

You won't regret the gold.

Seems you like lots of color! To many different colors can really chop up a home.......If it was me I would paint it white...make it bright and cheerful...the wood beams are beautiful and they wood be the star of the room!

But it's not me...so rather than Gold...my least favorite color with stained wood....I would lean towards a green.

Sorry to be the downer of the group but I don't like the gold…at all. I prefer white/cream to highlight the dark wood. If you want color though, try Home Interiors with Ease's suggestions.

it has to be true to the house everyone. we know there was white in the early 30s, obviously the gold was there, but are the other colors even possible?

Wall paint color is ALWAYS the last choice for a room. Do you have all your furniture, rugs, window treatments, artwork, accessories? We don't see it, so I would not think to offer a color suggestion at this stage.

The furniture is a single couch and some end tables. The rug and the tapestry are the only other non-TV related things that will be in the room. If you check out my ideabook on living room at the Westover house you can see them all.

Thank you for the advice thus far. I like green and the kitchen is already Kittery Point Green from Ben Moore, but the rug has no green.

Also, the room, along with the entire first floor of the house minus the kitchen area and powder room was originally all gold. It was painted off white decades ago. Both gold and off white are period correct for a Tudor.

I would not use the kitchen color in the living room, it doesn't seem "right" to me to use it in the public rooms as well.

After looking at your idea book, I personally, would do an off white. I would put the color in a great rug, tapestries, window treatments, etc.

My first off white choice would be BM Moonlight White 2143-60
