Your perfect rug is 10 by 14. In a neutral. When you have that in the ROOM, decide your duvet, whether you like to paint or whatever. Don't make brain surgery from a thing that isn't brain surgery, but is simple math. 10 X 14.........Okay? I am not telling you, the ROOM is telling you. If you were my client, I may have killed you by now : )lol

Love the textured mocha rug! But, I don't think you will regret cancelling the floral. The indigo blue bedspread is lovely, but, unless it is an exact color match with the chairs ... I think you may need to go with a lighter blue tone, more of a soft gray blue, more like the platinum rug (which, and of course you will be getting the 10 x14) and which, in my HMO might be worth waiting for.

The thing is, just going from the photos, the wall color seems to be introducing a distinctly green tone into the room, and it is very evident when looking at it with the chairs. Then chairs "pop" blue. So, whether this is true or not, it "looks/feels" like combining elements in a room where the palette is: Wood-Browns/tan-beiges/greens/blues/white and now we are adding in grays/silvers.

Last time and I'm out.... for which I am sure all will be thrilled??? Paint is cheap O\in a room room scenario. Pick any neutral 10x14 rug you love!!! It will work with the chairs. Now.... what do you want the bedding and walls to be? Don't get "hung up" on the ready made curtains either. The rug is the first important element, the bedding second, the paint is third, the curtains fourth. And yes....the walls appear greenish/sage on the monitor. Pick your 10x 14 and go from THERE. The rest will fall into place. It really will.
The agony you are doing over this is what a pro would not do, so try it the easy way. That is the easiest path to a result you will love.

Related to color, I can change the wall paint but I can't change the drapes ... they are actually custom, new and not cheap either. When they installed them, they felt blah to me, so I'm really trying to work with the drapes and chairs to make the room not feel flat. I don't want to make the same mistake with the rug that I did with the drapes. Anyway, it is what it is.

Lessismore -- thank you so much for your input on color. I really appreciate it! I understand what you are saying is that adding the silvers just confuses everything so I will try to stick with the first group of colors.

ACA - don't get me wrong, I like the silvers & grays. It's just with a green tinge on the walls, it creates a mega contrast with the blues, and then, it might be harder to blend them add in the right blues in various items/areas. I "feel" (rather than see, LOL) that your chairs are probably a blue with gray - I think for me that the problematic area it is more working with your wall color. It's just that when thinking of the overall palette, you have to think "green" too :-) Thank you for the opportunity to give an opinion.

I like the blue floral rug at the beginning and think a duvet cover that matched your drapes with accent pillow that matched the chairs/rug would create an integrated look. I like your wall color, too, and would consider painting the doors & trim on either side of the sitting area the same color to give a more unified look. Shears on the windows could add a soft unifying touch.

I'm referring to the small cupboard-type doors.

Just get the right sized rug first ,once you have it you will sense how the others fit.Just go with the color you like I suggest,WE can guide you for the other choices .Just be sure that you really like the rug or it will not work

Hi AbagailCA, please don't conclude your curtains were a mistake, they are beautifully made and lovely. I do agree with the poster who pointed out the many different colors, elements in the room ...I think way too disparate to "pull together" with the loveliest rug. If it were me, I would remove everthing (digitally or manually) except the bed, curtains and cha, step back, breathe, and peruse the houzz bedroom photo bank. Most are wildly out of reach for me, but you may notice proportion and arrangement in a seating area, for example, or wall color that works with the core pieces you have to start with.

Just wanted to update everyone on my progress. I bought a beautiful 10x14 distressed wool rug that has some hues of brown and taupe and grey in it. It feels absolutely delicious on bare feet ... we had to realign it a couple times which was quite an ordeal ... much harder than I thought due to its size and weight and the fact that we couldn't move all the furniture out. (We ended up moving the mattress off the bed though.)

Any suggestions on how to get the rug at the end to lay flat? Tape? Cutting the rug pad more?

Anyway - the wall color is probably the thing that will have to change. Also, I'm trying to figure out bedding. I brought up a lamp from a different part of the house just to see what that would look like. We would also probably change the art on the wall. Some day, we will get a chest for the base of the bed ... and maybe new bedside lamps. Possibly a round table to go between the chairs ... but most of this is on the wish list.

I'll post a bunch of pictures. Any comments on the color of the wall or the bedding are welcome.

Options for the wall color are:
1) Darker -
a/ blue/grey
b/ taupe or
c/ grey
2) Lighter -
a/ off-white
b/ cream

With the paint color, I want to somehow show off the drapes ... not have them look so mushy. Not sure how to go in terms of color. I will also probably re-post this under a new thread on just questions for color.

Thanks in advance ... here are pictures, including a close-up of the drapes. They lose their definition from farther away. They blend with the green walls but I think a contrast might be better.

It's hard to wait, but it looks like the wait was worth it :-) Back to color - Thanx loads for the closeup of the drapes too. These recent pictures give a much better idea of everything. Personally, I would paint your walls - Maybe using a tone deeper/lighter within the alcove. Right now, I'm thinking to "match" the lightest beige in your stripes from the drapes ... then choose your bedding (but I'm leaning towards the beigey one from the store). And/Or a tailored drop skirt on the bed with the white duvet and blue throw. There is someone here who does a great "color visualization" on painting rooms. I'm going to see if I can track them down in my feed.

I feel the cream or the light color will pull th edrapes to create a unified look.Minor add ons can always be done,so far it is great

your floors look very healthy! chose some thing that will keep the comfort and warmth, yet still leaving the modern look of the floor. Protect your floor by placing protective pads under all furniture that won't be on carpet. It's a beautiful room!

I changed your wall colors in photoshop just so you can see how they look with the different wall colors. I made the wall by windows a different color for contrast and to make your drapes stand out more.

I think if you put something heavy in the areas where the area rug is sticking up, over time it will flatten out. They always do that when you first unroll a rug.

I would go with a light blue/ grey in the tone of the curtains or a soft beige taken fron the curtain stripe on the walls. You could use your coffee table as a bench at the end of your bed with a cushion made for the top in a fabric that will coordinate with your duvet and put a small round table in between your chairs.

I used the photo shop program, and had to select the walls and then used the Hues saturation and color balance to get these colors. I have my living room in colors similar to these. I used Behr Flat paint wth primer in it. The colors I used by Behr Paint are: Soft Demin ICC-46 (blue) and Comforting ICC-42 (Beige but darker than this) You could use something like a color called Baked Scone ICC-21 by Behr. and what I am going to do later when we get rid of our popcorn ceiling and add a texture similar to our walls is use Desert White ICC-11 to lighten our rooms up a little. If you have a store like Home Depot, Lowes, that sells Behr Paint, take these pictures with you, and one of your drapes to show them what you are trying to do. I picked my colors to represent the sky for blue and sand for the beige color, and the ceiling would complient the two for our place. If you give them the color codes I gave you for Behr paint, they can show you in person along with your drapes how they would look. I made our wall blue where the wall unit is and the rest the beige color, blue was our accent wall. Our kitchen has an open concept and we painted the kitchen in the same color blue, but in satin paint so the walls looks seamless, eventhough one wall if Satin and the adjoining wall is Flat paint.

Every step I did when I was remodeling different areas of the our condo, I took pictures as a guide for everything I bought, whether it was paint, area rug, bedding, furniture, etc. and it was a tremendous help for me.

and make sure to bring the pictures you take with you, so you can show the person helping you in the stores too.

When picking paint colors, make sure to let the person helping you know whether your room is well light with natural light, that will make a huge difference on your color choice.

I do agree thatonce you have pics it becomes easier to match up with the paint colors.Surely I think the blue as a accent wall is suitable as compared to the other 2 in the pic

Just wanted to update this thread that we painted the walls a deep charcoal (C2-483, Shale) and I really *love* the dramatic look. It is also somehow very peaceful! We still have several things we need to do to complete the room (hanging art, accent pillows, a table between the chairs, change of bedside lampshades etc) but we are getting there! The pictures don't totally do it justice ... the rug looks murky in the pictures but it is actually kind of bright. Also, the walls look darker in the photos than they are. But hopefully you get a sense of it.

Looks great , my only suggestion is I think painting the two access doors on the side of the nook the same color as the walls would help them blend in. They are utility doors and not a feature you would want to emphasize, it would also make it look more sleek and contemporary.

@aniluap2 - thanks. My husband is a little resistant to painting those doors, but we will see. Thought you would be interested to see that I moved the table at the end of the bed. It does the trick for the timebeing. I noticed you had suggested that before. Someday we might get a bench there, but this is fine for now.

Also, maybe you could help me on this? I'm thinking about putting a leaning mirror where the current piece of art is, but I'm wondering if that would make too many door-like shapes? There is another spot in the back corner of the room that could fit a leaning mirror. (Those doors in the bottom photo are for our closets.) Right next to the art is a lightswitch. I don't have a lot of room to work with there.

MEN! My husband, early in our marriage always questioned my decorating choices, but through 31 happy years and 11 houses he has come to trust my choices. To them, it is a door and should match all the other doors in the room, which i get, but it's one you want to hide, not draw attention to. It aso really pops next to the wood dresser and makes that wall seem unbalanced. I think the back corner might be the place for the mirror although with and interesting frame the mirror could look quite distinct from the doors,though they are similarly shaped. The table looks perfect at the end of the bed!

P. S if you don't put the mirror next to the closet I would hand another picture below the one already on the wall to fill the space a little more.

I like the wall color. I also like the idea of a mirror, leaning or hanging.

I too think that the charcoal color looks separate ,but if you think you want to stick with the color we will have to chart something else.I think the same blue color will give the continuity.As for the mirror I think a mirror which has some embellishment around will look apt.Think about it.

Actually now that you reported that wall I realize that the switch gets in the way of hanging another picture so I do think that's where your leaning mirror should go. Maybe something silver framed and contemporary?

I think a mirror with a frame which would be its embellishment would look good,whatever is your choice withregards to the embellishment just to keep in mind the contrasts with the wall and whether you would like it to be a focal point .AS aniluap has mentioned one with silver frame will look good.

I didn't read all the posts. I would paint the small door under the stair case or dormer, the same color as the wall and the moulding also. I don't think it shoulld be a focal point to the space.

2 Area rugs would be very useful in this room as it is the living room and great for game players. I would recommend going with 1 largest area rug to help you pull varying patterns and colours together. The 50 by 65 inch in size (assuming most people will buy a wider one*) would look fabulous on the floor if a large rug isn’t something you want to do.
